We have preliminarily found Temu in breach of its obligation to properly assess the risks of illegal products being sold on its marketplace.

Evidence shows there is a high risk for EU consumers to come across illegal products on the platform.

Analysis of a mystery shopping exercise we conducted found that consumers shopping on Temu are very likely to find non-compliant products among the offer, such as baby toys and small electronics.

@EUCommission

This is absolutely irrelevant.

Yesterday you caved to a fucking bully, degraded #EU citizens to servants to a fascist regime and damaged the idea of #Europe beyond repair.

This "deal" with the #US is an act of sheer spinelessness and cowardice.

I was never before so ashamed to be a #European.

LONDON (AP) — Twenty-five countries including #Britain, #France and a host of #European nations issued a joint statement on Monday that puts more pressure on #Israel, saying the war in #Gaza “must end now” and Israel must comply with international law.

The foreign ministers of countries including #Australia, #Canada and #Japan said “the suffering of civilians in Gaza has reached new depths.” They condemned “the drip feeding of aid and the inhumane killing of civilians, including children, seeking to meet their most basic needs of water and food.”

The statement described as “horrifying” the deaths of over 800 #Palestinians who were seeking aid...

#German court rules #Meta #tracking technology violates #European #privacy laws

A German court has ruled that Meta must pay €5,000 ($5,900) to a German #Facebook user who sued the platform for embedding tracking technology in third-party websites — a ruling that could open the door to large fines down the road over data #privacy violations relating to pixels and similar tools.

Europe's AI #gigafactory push attracts 76 bids, EU tech chief says

"Seventy-six companies have bid to develop Europe's artificial intelligence gigafactories, the EU's tech chief said on Monday, hailing a bigger than expected response to the bloc's push to catch up with the U.S. and China in this key #technology.

The #European Commission made the announcement four months after it allocated 20 billion euros ($23 billion) in EU funding for the construction of four AI gigafactories across the bloc.

Such facilities, in essence large-scale AI computing and data storage hubs, will be equipped with about 100,000 state-of-the-art AI chips.

"We got 76 submissions proposing to set up #AI gigafactories in 16 member states and across 60 different sites," EU tech chief Henna Virkkunen told a press conference.

"And this exceeds far beyond our expectations and this showcases Europe's growing momentum and enthusiasm for innovating in AI in Europe," she said, declining to name the companies because of business confidentiality information."

There are protests everywhere, including here in #Belgium. On Sunday (11 May), tens of thousands of Belgians took to the streets in #Brussels to demand an end to the blockade and the war on #Gaza.

A week later, on 18 May, a hundred thousand #Dutch people held a march through The Hague with the same demands.

Geert Wilders wrote on X: "Today demo in Dhaag against Israel + for Hamas. Thousands of confused people draw a red line. I also draw a red line. Against terror and starving their own people by Hamas and for maximum destruction of their murderous infrastructure. And for Israel."
So the rest of the world sees this differently.

...For about a week now, we have been reading increasing criticism of Israeli and US policy in #US newspapers. #France, the #UK and #Canada are suddenly threatening concrete action if Israel continues the blockade and war. Belgian rectors took the lead with the joint demand to suspend the #European Association Agreement with Israel.

Many will feel that all this does not go far enough. Indeed, that resolution can be criticised.

The decision by the European Foreign Affairs Council to first "investigate" whether or not Israel is in compliance with human rights before it wants to review the association agreement is also more than cynical.

A group of #EU officials has written to the leaders of the European institutions criticising the bloc for “little or no meaningful action” in response to the dire humanitarian crisis in #Gaza.

EU “inaction” has “contributed to the environment of unaccountability that resulted in the full-scale invasion of the Gaza Strip taking place at this moment”, continues the letter sent to the presidents of the European Commission, European Council and the #European parliament.

The letter was sent less than a week after the EU foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas announced a review of the EU’s trade agreement with Israel, at the behest of a large majority of member states. The EU staff group welcomed this move, but said it was “devastatingly late for thousands killed in Gaza”.

EU Staff for Peace last year called for a suspension of the EU-#Israel agreement, an end to member states’ arms exports to Israel and “concrete efforts” to support the work of the international criminal court and international court of justice. The group has now accused the institutions they work for of an “apparent double standard” by failing to condemn European leaders who discussed hosting Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister wanted for alleged war crimes by the #ICC.
