We taught our 10 yo #Catan last night. According to my app, I havent played it in 13 years and I remember why now lol. While I enjoyed seeing that my daughter was having fun, the dice rolls were ridiculously stupid. We used the beginner setup for her and we could never get real brick or wheat production. And we rolled 7 every other time. I eventually won which was nice, and watching my daughter trade was fun but rest was ugh.

Yep. At one point we picked up a copy of the Catan dice game and have house ruled that when playing base Catan that if a player doesn't receive anything from the dice roll they get to role one of the Catan dice to receive a random card. Speeds things up nicely and helps curb odd stretches without needed card types.

@s3rvant @boardgamebreakdown That's cool! We pretty much only play with the Catan resource card set (which was part of some extension) instead of actual dice. It has similar probabilities but much less swingy (4 cards aren't used each time through, but you can't get a 7 every other roll)

@tschfflr @s3rvant @boardgamebreakdown Settlers of Nürnberg uses the card deck approach instead of dice. It really takes care of some of the dice randomness, improving overall play. If you’re hot with the dice in Catan, it can be so fun! But rarely as much fun for the other players at the same time.
