Our local covid cautious group (partly affiliated with Aotearoa Covid Action) put on a social, kid friendly, masks-required board games afternoon today, and we had so much fun!

Really stoked to have found out these diverse, thoughtful and wholesome community of humans to remind us we are not alone in resisting mass infection.

😷✊🏽🎲🃏

Hopefully this is only the first of many such events!

Cheeky Parrot Games was one of the main organisers in the covid safe game event yesterday (they provided most of the games we played).

I have been clicking around their website and found this thoughtful and very nicely written piece on covid awareness from a couple of months ago.

Give it a read, play their games! They are cool!

OK board game folks of mastodon, what are your favorite solo only boardgames. Not boardgames that are multiplayer with a solo mode, or an expansion that makes it solo. I am talking games designed specifically for solo only.

Think memos war and legacy of yu.

#QuestionOfTheDay what's a piece of media you like that for whatever reason (hasn't aged well, problematic, disturbing, offensive, very niche, pornographic, creator sucks, etc) you basically can't show anybody?

(For me it's the movie Major League)

Ages ago, I Kickstarted the deluxe edition of this game for my partner, and it finally arrived yesterday! I had the chance to play it with her and her husband tonight. It was a VERY close game, as you can see on the final score sheet. :)

The game was very cute, and I can imagine people from Mastodon relating to it. The basic cycle is puttering around your house littering your apartment with stacks of books and recharging your social battery until you have the spoons to leave the house, at which time you go into town and visit the used book store, the library, the book exchange, and the shops to pick up more books and neat things. When your social battery is depleted, you head home, unload your backpack, and putter around again.

You win by arranging your book stacks to complete certain goals, collecting lots of books, and collecting neat trinkets and stuff at the shops.

It's got a very cozy vibe, and the production value is quite high. Although we had the deluxe edition, I get the feeling that the same will be true for the retail edition as well. It moves pretty fast, but optimizing things takes a fair bit of planning and thought. Overall, I quite liked it and am looking forward to trying it again sometime.

The board game publisher CGE, recently put out an announcement for their upcoming Codenames Harry Potter edition.

It’s incredibly disappointing that they would choose to collab on a project that would actively support and give money to the transphobic bigot, JK Rowling.

It was an easy decision for us. We will not be buying, reviewing, or recommending CGE games going forward.

Trans rights are human rights, simple as that.

Here are some links as a rough timeline of events, which started with their announcement post on Bluesky.

Their response after pushback: https://www.czechgames.com/news/why-we-created-the-new-licensed-version-of-codenames - Please note how they avoided saying the name of the game or franchise. Comments are turned off.

Them blocking en masse (Including some trans game designers): https://clearsky.app/codenamesgame.bsky.social/blocked-by

#July page of the 2025 fox plushy calendar.

Did you know that foxes looooove #boardgames? Especially ones where you have to outfox others. We're looking forward to playing a few rounds with our friends at the end of the month at a community event in Bremen.

This is where I really get value out of 3D printing: I love Palace of Mad King Ludwig, but I hate the stacks of tiles; I'm too prone to knocking them over!

A few minutes with my callipers and some time on Tinkercad, followed by half a day of printing, and now I have perfect tile holders!

Printed in marble filament. Files available here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:7024898
