There are some areas where open source struggles to keep up.
Collaborative document editing is a big one. We don't love a lot of the existing solutions (Collabora, OnlyOffice, Outline).
We are super excited by the emerging project of Docs: https://github.com/suitenumerique/docs
It has a public funding model which could be really interesting and a viable Google Docs competitor that's already been deployed at a reasonably large scale.
We look to seeing what other projects emerge.
We will be honest and say that for a small to medium organisation, their are more up front costs to a more open infrastructure.
There's more upfront costs e.g. discovery, communications, quotes, setup. We're a small co-op so we don't have the same amount invested in automation as big tech.
However these costs balance out over the long term as you don't get locked into the tiers and paywalling of big providers where as soon as you hit a certain scale they tighten the screws and start trying to get real money out of you.
That's how big tech work, they set themselves up using loads of capital, hook in the small fishes for free or cheap to get market dominance then once folks are locked into their workflows, they go for the big clients.
Stop playing their game! There is a different way.

What we are certain of however is that the eco system of libre software has enough tools to meet the needs of most organisations. There's a standard set of apps they come up again and again (feel free to share your experiences in the replies).
Single Sign On - Keycloak, Authentik (passkeys for passwordless login anyone)?
File storage - @nextcloud
Password management - Vaultwarden
Wiki - There's loads of options here
Email - We're currently reselling email from our co-op friends at Web Architects
Website - Wordpress, static site etc
Messaging - @matrix @RocketChat etc
Once you get this stack integrated, and your org trained, it's really powerful! It's also super resource efficient. You can run it on a single server (or spread it onto multiple small servers).
