"I think we want a city that responds to the needs of its people in that sense and prioritizes these things as the way forward," said Hale. "I don't feel L.A. is doing that effectively."..."

German rail transport is now among the worst in Europe. How did it come to this?
https://www.npr.org/2025/12/12/g-s1-100794/germany-train-rail-deutsche-bahn
I remember my first time in Europe more than 20 years ago, when I was still doing research in physics. Back then, researchers from other countries praised German trains, prices aside.
Does anyone here have insight into what went wrong?

The #UK faces strategic crisis. After decades of neglect of crucial #infrastructure, it now even lacks capacity to monitor the decline.
In this case, dangerous deterioration of a major road bridge was unnoticed for 15 years. #Austerity since the 2008 crash has left local authorities short of skilled technical staff to evaluate infrastructure.
#UKpol has given itself a form of institutional #DunningKruger Syndrome: it has destroyed its own awareness of its failings.

@heidilifeldman This is good to hear, but it won't help that FEMA fired or reassigned all the staff writing on BRIC projects. All the allocated funding has been 'deobligated' and returned to Treasury accounts.
The states still have staff that can manage the grants from the recipient side, but the bureaucracy to implement the program is long gone.

After 27 years within budget Austria open 6thlongest railway tunnel in the world
#HackerNews #Austria #Railway #Tunnel #Koralmtunnel #Infrastructure #Longest #Tunnel
If you could build a #tunnel, you could cut travel time between #Bergen and #Stavanger (2nd and 3rd most populous cities in #Norway) by 40 minutes
Problem: it would be the longest and deepest undersea road tunnel ever
Well, Norway's building it
27 km long (17 miles), 392 m deep (1,286 feet)
It's called #Rogaland fastforbindelse: Rogaland Fixed Link
#Construction started 2018. Estimated completion 2033
Cost? About $2.4 billion (?!)

How to Support FreeBSD on Your Cloud
A recent post from Colin Percival outlines practical steps and considerations that can help cloud providers deliver a smooth FreeBSD experience.
Some of the areas highlighted include image publishing workflows, testing practices, and establishing communication channels that make it easier to surface issues and share updates.

At the end of a day of street photography we took the train back to Liverpool Street Station from Oxford Circus. That of course calls for the obligatory long exposure shot of the train coming into the station.

The internet still is a Wild West. It's weird how gov dropped the ball in providing us with #infrastructure, where offline they do provide the electrical grid, roads, bridges, etc. in well-organized fashion. Gov should have provided the search infrastructure of the web, in a similar fashion.
