🌏 This is THE thing that some people really really don't seem to get:

“...it’s taken 100 years to get the oceans that warm at depth,” he says. “Even if we stopped using fossil fuels today, it’s going to take hundreds of years for that to circulate through the ocean...”

The oceans just keep getting hotter

For the eighth year in a row, the world’s oceans absorbed a record-breaking amount of heat in 2025.

@madeindex Are those people really stuck on that point or is there actually nothing you can say to convince them of anything?

My child is at the point where his classes involve discussion of world news. He recently told me there’s no point in learning anything because global warming is going to ruin everything, AI will take the jobs, and he can’t make a large impact on any of these issues (we had a long discussion about this and I don’t yet know how much of his view on this has changed).

Meanwhile, my mom thinks god will take every believer to heaven, my stepfather thinks global warming is mostly a hoax by solar/wind companies to make more money, and my brother thinks AI will save us all. This group has only budged on climate issues by moving the goalposts (they started with “it’s fake”, then “it’s natural sun cycles”, then “capitalism/god will save us”), so my personal, anecdotal experience is that the people that I know that care are borderline giving up (including my spouse), and the people that don’t care have so much faith in god/money saving them that nothing is really changing.

@shadows I try to think of it like this: we are 8+ billion people, each person is a chance to solve our global issues. The more people try, the more likely we are to solve them. Therefore I try, you try and seeing us try (including children) - other people will also try. There is not just 1 solution to this, there are infinite, so you try yours and if it fails that's OK <3

❝...These billionaires WILL fucking kill you, to keep doing capitalism on a boiling planet. They're installing fascism so you don't have a choice, they're controlling police states because they mean to preserve their world order, with violence--that's actually why security forces exist, everywhere...❞

@madeindex Further; Milankovitch Cycles being on a full-tilt cycle, could make any recovery, multiples longer.
