If I were a digital rights activist, I would see this time as a golden opportunity.

#Grok, the #AI "assistant" powered by Musk's xAI, has become an engine of non-consensual image and video generation at a mass scale - including pornographic and pedopornographic content. Creating and distributing this imagery has never been quicker or easier. All one has to do is reply to an image posted by someone on X with a mention of Grok and a prompt. This feature was restrained recently but people who pay an $8 subscription to X can still do it. As Sam Cole writes on @404mediaco : "Masterful Gambit: Musk Attempts to Monetize Grok's Wave of Sexual Abuse Imagery" https://www.404media.co/x-premium-grok-paywall-images-ai-generator/

How many politicians pushing for #ChatControl are still using X? How many official government accounts? You know, the same people who screamed WE NEED TO PROTECT THE CHILDREN and pushed for the scanning of all digital communications and files (including E2EE encrypted ones) of European citizens? An "Orwellian nightmare" as @Em0nM4stodon wrote on Privacy Guides: https://www.privacyguides.org/articles/2025/09/08/chat-control-must-be-stopped/#act-now

In the Privacy Guides article by Em, the French, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and Irish governments (amongst many others) were in full support of Chat Control. As far as I can tell, prominent politicians, Prime Ministers and official government accounts from these countries are still posting on X.

Is there anything we can do to point out the hypocrisy? Or have the abuse machine that is Grok sanctioned and fined? And - this is key - use this horrible incident to push politicians to FINALLY quit X? It's about time.

#StopChatControl #LeaveX #QuitX #SaveSocial

@elena @404mediaco @Em0nM4stodon You would think the bad press attracted by Facebook's origin as an app for rating college girls would have been enough of a warning to prevent this. Musk's moral compass is so broken he must navigate by astrology. He clearly shouldn't be trusted with a planet, space ships, cars or a skate-board.

Just 'banter', Elong! LOLs, huh?

@woo absolutely! wholeheartedly agree with you except for one point: I don't think his moral compass is broken... I think he has NO moral compass, never had. To me he's a sociopath devoid of basic human decency and empathy

@Kurosetii thank you for pointing this out! Still, the Italian government is currently using X as a press release / communications platform. I'm eager to see if they will say anything about Grok

@elena @404mediaco @Em0nM4stodon Absolutely agree. I imagine there are quite a few politicians who instinctively feel they should be off X being advised by their political parties comms teams that they are losing a huge advertising opportunity, especially during elections, if they leave, and that they would be at a disadvantage to their opponents. Until the stigma of using X outweighs the electoral cost, I'm just not sure how much change we'll see.

@robhardware excellent point Rob. I also feel that vanity metrics play a lot into it too... they are reluctant to leave behind a platform - and rebuild from scratch in a new place - if they had accumulated a lot of followers over the years.

IMHO it's all about optics and ego - even if X has armies of bots and engagement has plummeted for real users... when will they see the light?

@elena @404mediaco @Em0nM4stodon As much as I agree. Using pedopornographic as a call to action is bad. Like really bad.

Why? Because no one opposes this. Fighting pedopornographic is always the right thing!

This is where #chatconrol from the EU (mass surveillance, weakening cryptographic stuff etc) is justified with. Fight pedopornographic!

Of course, even most liberal Police institutions, like Germany who have one of the broadest civil liberties want to have more power, more control. Massively so. Reason? Fight pedopornographic stuff!

And no one would oppose. Because CSAM is called. And do YOU want kids to be harmed? Of course not. So hush, sit down, give us the keys to your encrpytion, privacy and some liberal rights.

And lets fight pedopornographic stuff! We wont use the powers for any other reason. Promised!

@chris Yet X Corp and Musk are pushing and want to monetise exactly that content. And to leave Twitter because of it (even if people should have left it way before it) is more of an effective way than chat control.

@gelbphoenix @chris indeed! I would invite everyone to read @Em0nM4stodon's excellent article on Chat Control that shows how it's ineffective to protect children and can do immeasurable harm to regular citizens not engaged in criminal activity: https://www.privacyguides.org/articles/2025/09/08/chat-control-must-be-stopped/#act-now
