What do people recommend as an instant chat platform (equivalent to #Slack, #Discord, i.e. with threads and public vs private channels, possibility to post photos and documents, something that you'd use at work to keep track of complex discussions & decisions) that doesn't have nor plan to add any #genAI "training" or "functionalities"?

I thought #Mattermost might be good but it turns out they also have genAI stuff.. (https://mattermost.com/pricing/)

Signal.

Or roll out your own, with matrix, or nextcloud.

Hmm, Signal is good for personal texting but I don't see how you could you use it for work when you need threads and sharing of different kind of files? Also you need to tie it to a phone number. Unless there's a secret way to use signal that I'm not aware of I don't think it can work for that.

Is matrix the same as signal? I've never used it.

I keep hearing about #nextcloud so I guess I should look into it more... Do you mean "nextcloud talk"? Unfortunately it seems Nextcloud also has a genAI " assistant.. https://nextcloud.com/#nextcloud_assistant_tab

@elduvelle @albertcardona signal doesn't need a phone number any more, but agree on need for threads etc.

@elduvelle @albertcardona We've been using Zulip for about 2 years, with the free non -profit/academic plan.

The tool is reliable, the UI could be better (especially when compared to Slack or Mattermost), but in general I strongly endorse it.

I hope it will not be subjected to enshittification, but so far so good!

@alesssia @elduvelle @albertcardona Have been part of a team that uses Zulip for about 7 months now, and really enjoy it, I think their topic approach is really good compared to Slack
