Unpopular opinion: the silver lining in server outages is that they pull the curtain & reveal some hard truths about who is really behind some services we use... especially stuff we think are alternatives to Big Tech (spoiler: maybe they aren't).
Case in point: last year's #Microsoft outage took out #DuckDuckGo (https://mashable.com/article/microsoft-outage-affects-bing-copilot-duckduckgo-chatgpt).

@_elena As much as I love self hosting, I will never get my friends or family on board with matrix, it's too weird and unfriendly even for me. Maybe a self-hosted #mattermost or #nextcloud chat?

Another cool feature of #XMPP are "gateways" that make it relatively easy to connect with other IMs and protocols. So you can have all these contacts in the same app(s).

@span ncoca It's not just me, then. With a Web app as complex as Slack, it's hard to say if it's intentional or some programmer unknowingly making a change that proactively tries to get those permissions -- most of their Web devs have presumably already granted permission and would never notice the change.
@span auspicacious I really wish I could get these groups to switch a more secure alternative like #Matrix or #Mattermost. The stuff they'll share in groups, thinking Slack is safe is a bit maddening.

We want to move, but whereto? We consider #NextCloud Talk, #Mattermost, or #Zulip. We are fine with #selfhosting. It must be #opensource. We just need the chat, not integration with video or other advanced features.

A “code of conduct” or “rules” plugin to Mattermost would be dope, and could probably be put to good use by several communities.
In my mind, it would:
1. Add a “report” function to messages, which would alert mods in a private channel
2. Raise the visibility of server rules/Code of Conduct, similar to the rules onboarding in Discord
3. Maybe introduce a mod queue where reported messages (passing a threshold of reports?) are redacted until handled by a mod?
