@Tutanota Thank yout for the article. Is here any thing with live traffic data based on OSM? Did not see this topic while skimming throught the article.
@Tutanota If you'll ever write an article on how to update #OpenStreetMap , we'd love a mention
@MapComplete Thanks for reaching out! Noted. 😉
@Tutanota are you really sure about french translation?
At the end of article:
"Reprenez votre vie privée avec d’autres solutions Google"
(translation of: "Take back your privacy with more Google alternatives")
Which means in french: "Take back your privacy with other Google solutions".
I would suggest "Reprenez votre vie privée avec d'autres solutions" or "Reprenez votre vie privée avec plus d'alternatives à Google" ou même "Reprenez votre vie privée avec d'autres solutions que Google" ^^
@Tutanota plasticized paper maps, street/road signs, and your actual memory. After possibly using any online search system for "step by step" and writing or printing that out, is better than anything on a mobile electronic device.
@Tutanota How is Apple Maps, actually? Seems promising if DuckDuckGo has it built-in, but it’s Apple...
@Tutanota I like OrgnanicMaps/CoMaps for offline use on mobile.
But I would add @cartes_app : it is open source, based on OpenStreetMap data with public transport and @panoramax integrations. It is focused on France for the added data, but could be enhanced or replicated for other local uses. It is my go-to app on Desktop now.
@carronol Thanks for sharing this. We will note it down to look into for the next article update. :)
@Tutanota As much as I love the OpenStreetMap project, there always seems to be a few things that get in the way of me adopting them. (and I know I should be telling *them*, but here we are)
• Localisation: on desktop I always only see the native names of things, and I unfortunately cannot read every script on the planet (Mapsme/coMaps/etc. work slightly better on mobile)
• stores, restaurants etc. lack information beyond that they exist
• transportation information
• usable search
@Tutanota an advantage to me is that I can tell Osmand+ that my Mercedes van cannot go faster than 85 kph :)
@Tutanota i've been very satisfied with comaps.
A simple alternative for the desktop:
https://snapcraft.io/install/backslash-maps/debian
Also, CoMaps will provide a Flatpak: https://codeberg.org/comaps/comaps/issues/548 💪
@Tutanota I have been using CoMaps since it came out
@Tutanota Have you tried these yourselves and know that they work reliably? I have tried Organic Maps and OsmAnd with Google Auto in my car. Organic Maps crashed a lot, so unusable for me. OsmAnd gave some suggestions for routing that were very suboptimal and confusing. I haven't tried your third option.
@Tutanota how about https://maps.me/ , I 've used it for some years, find it good.
#Mapsme
@YanouRed We do, it's at the bottom of the article. :)
@tdelhomenie Hey! It should now be updated in French too.
@Tutanota right, thanks!
@Tutanota or, in this case, any other type of navigation, which probably is 100 times better than GM (for example TomTom)
@Tutanota As someone who values a maps + navigation service that also works on desktop (seriously, "mobile only" is the worst), and lets you sync places and collections, I can very much recommend https://wego.here.com
I'm happy to receive recommendations that are based on OpenStreetmap and offer the same, but so far I've been unlucky.
@Tutanota At least Organic Maps supports Apple-Carplay so Googlemaps is not needed for car navigation.
@net_gremlin Thanks for sharing.
