Playtime

Nobody is quite sure why bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales choose each other's company. Perhaps they find food more easily, or the large pods provide safety.

All I know is that one beautiful day in September, they followed our boat for half an hour as we were whale-watching.

They were leaping through the water of Skjálfandi bay with joy, and just because they could. What more reason could they need?

Húsavík, NE #Iceland.

A colour photo of a stretch of sea under a clear sky with fluffy clouds. A range of mountains is in the distance, dropping to the coastline. In the centre of the shot is a group of dolphins and whales, the dolphins in the lead. Several of the sleek bodies can be seen above the water as they are leaping.
