For many #women in #Mexico, the #crime against the president, during which a man tried to kiss her & put his hands on her chest, was a sad fact of life. Mexico has a long history of machismo, a culture that teaches men they are entitled to control women, according to Mexican activists & female politicians, as well as a system of norms that reinforce #inequality & #violence.

On the streets of #Mexico City this week, many #women could quickly recall frightening personal incidents—men following them on the street or groping them on a crowded train. Many said they did not believe they could count on the #police to pursue such cases, whether #SexualHarassment was a punishable #crime or not.

In the capital, where #SexualHarassment & #abuse are crimes, many #women said the #police would file a complaint only if a victim knew her abuser’s name. Going to the authorities was widely seen as a waste of time, they said; even if a complaint was filed, it would be unlikely to result in a full investigation or arrest, as it did in President Sheinbaum’s case.
