So how many of us are taking advantage of the Win10 End of Life?

How many Linux Install Parties are you holding in your town?

"Did Windows 10 just notify you to pay and update?

Want to update your computer to a system that doesnt spy on you, is ad free, is secure, and doesn't cost anything?

Meet us at the library this Saturday from 10am to 3pm!

We'll install Linux on your laptop for free! (We'll even make it "dual boot" so you can keep your old system just in case!). Please remember to back up your documents and pictures on a thumb drive beforehand!

We'll have demo laptops so you can play with Linux and just check it out as well!)

@tinker this is a great idea! Do you have any literature that you hand out, or a basic guide for how the event runs? I'd love to do something like this, but if there's any way to use existing resources that would make it much easier!

@tinker I'm in a small town in rural Missouri but I've been doing them twice a month at the local library for the past couple of months. Next one is set for October 24.

@dennyhenke - Oh nice! How popular are they? Do folks come often? How do you advertise it out to your town? And what have been some interesting situations that arise from them?

(Lol, I just dumped a lot of questions at you!)

@tinker It's been pretty slow going but I'm viewing it as a long-term project that's just taking its first steps. We're a fairly poor area and a lot of folks just use a phone. BUT, many that use a computer are using pretty old computers. So, there is a definite need.

Thus far the project has been based out of our library who post each event on their Facebook. I manage their website and have set-up a small sub-site specifically for the project. We're also offering...

@tinker
We're also offering support via presentations, open "office hours" which are days I show up to do installs. I use that time to meet with anyone that needs help or wants to learn. And I'm slowly building up what I'm calling the Free Software and Privacy Working Group. Building that as a sort of user group but also organizing, hopefully to other towns via the folks at Beyond40 and FSF/Libre Planet.

So, a local effort to organize regionally and more broadly.

@tinker I am trying to work up the courage to put a Nix image on a memory stick and format my win10s. Definitely not upgrading under any circumstances, but haven't touched anything technically since 2015.

Which nix should I install?
