🧵 3/4

Is the Earth warming faster now than in decades past?

2023 and 2024 were by far the two hottest years ever experienced in human history. And 21 of the last 22 months have seen warming rise above the UN’s fabled 1.5°C target.

That was attributed mainly to the 2023-2024 El Niño, when warmer ocean surfaces periodically raise temperatures. But the El Niño is gone now, and so we should see the heat receding.

Except it’s not.

As you can see in the chart below, temperatures in 2025 are holding mostly steady so far with the record highs of 2024, even though they shouldn’t be, according to the IPCC.

Here is what Hansen and his colleagues have predicted…
____________________________

Global temperature for 2025 should decline little, if at all, from the record 2024 level. Absence of a large temperature decline after the huge El Nino-spurred temperature increase in 2023-24 will provide further confirmation that IPCC’s best estimates for climate sensitivity and aerosol climate forcing were both underestimates. Specifically, 2025 global temperature should remain near or above +1.5C relative to 1880-1920.

We’ll find out if they are right.

🧵 2/4

In February 2025, Dr. James Hansen and several of his scientific colleagues published an important paper titled “Global Warming Has Accelerated: Are the United Nations and the Public Well-Informed?”

Their work is deeply researched and, to me at least, fully convincing. But the general reaction to this publication was as I described in the first entry above.

Here, in part, is what Hansen recently said about that…
_______________________________

A strange phenomenon occurred in response to our paper. A few reports appeared in the media the next day, but, almost uniformly, these reports dismissed our conclusions as a fringe opinion, out of step with the larger scientific community, and thus there was no continuing discussion of the issues raised in our paper.

How did the media arrive at that conclusion, and is that conclusion truly representative of the wider scientific community? Are there important repercussions for the public of the media’s approach for assessing a climate research paper, especially for today’s young people, indeed, for the future of all people?

Our analysis puts equal emphasis on information on climate change extracted from (1) observations of ongoing climate change, (2) global climate models, and (3) Earth’s long-term climate history (paleoclimate data). We used all three of these methods in our paper to arrive at three independent analyses of climate sensitivity, with each method concluding that climate sensitivity is high, much higher than the IPCC’s best estimate.

Criticisms of the Acceleration paper in the media did not address the physics in our three assessments of climate sensitivity. Instead, criticisms were largely ad hoc opinions, even ad hominem attacks. How can science reporting have descended to this level?

Climate science is now so complex, with many sub-disciplines, that the media must rely on opinions of climate experts. Although there are thousands of capable scientists in these disciplines, the media have come to depend on a handful of scientists, a clique of climate scientists who are willing, or even eager, to be the voice of the climate science community.

Given the success of this clique in painting us as outliers, we are dependent on the larger community being willing to help educate the media about the current climate situation. For that purpose, we will discuss – one-by-one in upcoming communications – several of the matters that are raised in our papers.

Global warming has accelerated.

That simple, straightforward statement — easily confirmed with an unbiased look at the data — draws strong reactions and even condemnation in corporate media from representatives of the mainstream scientific establishment.

Billionaire CEOs of major multinational corporations and the politicians they own are fully invested in the continuation of neoliberal capitalism, in forging ahead with Business As Usual.

They don’t want anything to upset that. So they will make sure that the news you see backs up their contention that everything is fine.

But everything is not fine.

Assuming our rulers stay on their present course, following the mantra of economic growth at any cost, then all the climate and environmental crises we're experiencing today will continue to worsen with increasingly disastrous results.

What will their response be to this?

Certainly not to end capitalism or even slow things down. That would be unthinkable!

Instead they will almost certainly opt for geoengineering at some point, using technology to alter Earth’s ecosphere in an attempt to allay the damage caused by technology altering Earth’s ecosphere.

That’s senseless and stupid. But that’s what they’ll do.

It may turn out, unfortunately, that some form of geoengineering will in fact be a necessity if we are to avoid the most catastrophic impacts of global heating.

But — and this is a very big but — that prospect should NOT be used as an excuse to continue with Business As Usual. It should not be seen as a way to prolong capitalism’s reign over us.

We need #Degrowth now.
