Corporate commitments are not “a sufficient alternative to enforcement of international law and domestic laws designed to prevent companies from monitoring individuals and committing human rights violations,” EFF’s @prilkit told In These Times. https://inthesetimes.com/article/ice-deportation-machine-surveillance-artificial-intelligence-thomson-reuters-clear-trump

The Data Brokers Fueling ICE’s Deportation Machine—And the Union Shareholders Fighting Back

"As investors, we are thinking about this as a risk to our investments, but also as a social and ethical issue.”

"'Me speech' is a common practice among rich and influential Americans. Practitioners of 'me speech' use the phrase 'free speech' quite a bit. But what they mean is free speech for themselves. They want a monopoly on it."

... These people suppress the freedom of speech. But because they repeat the phrase 'free speech' quite a lot, the media will often associate them with the idea."

I wonder if people would be more willing to believe how the fossil fuel industry doesn't care if the rest of us live if someone presented it as a conspiracy.

Learn Secrets you were never meant to know!

In the late 1950's a secret cabal of wealthy industrialists were told that the world was going to end...

And they did nothing but kept grabbing as much money as they could because they would rather you died then they become poor.

Oh.. yeah this isn't a conspiracy theory.

We've got court documents pretty much proving everything except for why they don't care, that's a guess.

@alienghic Timothy Snyder in a chapter in his 2024 book "On Freedom" addressed this. He coined the phrase "oligarchic escapes" for it, the #billionaires' fantasy that with enough money one can escape the #apocalypse through various means. #RationalWiki covers the concept on different pages, collected here:

I was just reading #TimothySnyder 's "On Tyranny" and he starts with a quote by Leszek Kolakowski.
I will use it tomorrow at my talk during our local #standupforscience event in Nancy.
