@madeindex the #MacBookPro #M4Max has an external (USB-C) HDD for backup. The #M1Max is bricked thanks to #Apple releasing their crapware #macOS ( #macOS26) knowing full well that in beta they were bricking devices. But once I get that repaired (DFU failed here) if Apple's so-called 'geniuses' can fix it it's still not worth an extra backup as it was used to set up the M4 Max. The M1 Max needs the keyboard replaced too. Thank goodness I got the M4 Max earlier this year!

@madeindex I did have a #fedora box but over a year and a half ago I made a terrible mistake at stupid o'clock. One disk had a SMART error (bad sector) so I replaced it .. but then I thought to self: why not make /boot #raid5 like the others (server is #raid6 and #raid1)? I was not thinking ... /boot was messed up. Couldn't salvage it. And I haven't been bothered enough to repair it. #anaconda is pathetic with md+lvm and I have the laptop so not worth it to me for now.

Meanwhile I'm quite behind on processing some #photos from some larger events I've been to, nothing professional, just hobby work, but it still stresses me out whenever I think about it.
By happenstance, two more of those events were this past weekend.
After taking a bunch of photos on Friday, I did the shopping Saturday, got home and started testing the disks and they finished one round of full surface testing just yesterday. [ continued ]

I had to decide -- more burn-in to check for early errors or just build the array and let it detect them? So I fired up mdadm to create my #RAID5 array and that took literally all day. Oh and today too. But its done now and I downloaded 15 GiB from one and 17 GiB from the other event off my main camera.
I can finally fire up #darktable and start culling and processing pictures.
Dear fellow photo #geeks, its not just you. It happens to all of us.
Also please be patient, I'll post #photos soon!

Random update that hits both my #photog and #sysadmin roles; I ran out of disk space for my raw #photography recently. I have a home-made #NAS box with a pair of disks in #RAID1 running Rocky Linux and I needed to get more space. I spent an evening shopping around for the best value I could get in local disks and that required driving to three Canada Computers locations to pick up one drive at each so I could build a #RAID5 array and not deal with this again in the near future.
