Apple has been resistant to add touchscreens to its MacBooks. But that could change later this year, with new touchscreen MacBook Pro models with OLED displays, Dynamic Island software, and a UI that varies depending on where you touch the screen. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-02-24/apple-s-touch-screen-macbook-pro-to-have-dynamic-island-new-interface #MacBookPro #Apple #Touchscreen #Laptops
Normally I update my Mac as it nears the end of operating system support, and it looked like my M1 MacBook Pro would last a good while. But the skyrocketing cost of RAM made me think twice, so I took my own advice and bought sooner rather than later. A great deal didn't hurt!

This afternoon, I took advantage of the rain to tidy up and clean my desk, as well as part of the cabinet to my right, which houses the switch and the Raspberry Pi 4 (powered by FreeBSD) that I use for various services.
I came across my old laptop again: a 2019 16" MacBook Pro, the last Intel model. I think it was one of the worst devices I’ve ever owned: sluggish, fans always loud, and the case 'polished' down quickly just from my hands. I used it for about a year, then passed it to my wife when I got the M1 Pro MBP - which I’m still using - in early 2022. By comparison, the Apple Silicon model feels brand new, even after four years of fairly intense use.
My wife had to stop using the 'old' one because the battery, despite having very few charge cycles, is practically dead. It doesn’t hold a charge, but that wouldn’t even be the biggest issue. The real trouble is that without a functional battery, it has become incredibly slow, with the fans constantly blasting, making it unusable. I tried turning it on again, but it even struggles to launch the macOS installer. I’m stuck: replacing the battery would cost 289 euros (from what I’ve read, the entire top case needs to be replaced), but I hate to leave it like this, as the hardware and screen still have a lot to offer.
I’ve thought about selling it as-is, but I think it would be difficult - an inexperienced buyer wouldn't understand that the slowness is caused specifically by the battery issue.
Any advice?

Schon an die Performance von Apples M4 kommt kein anderer Mobilprozessor heran, doch der M5 im neuen MacBook Pro 14" legt die Messlatte nochmals höher.

@madeindex as it is the 8TB HDDs I'm getting are quite high in price. SSDs would be much more I'd guess. Also the case is fit for more HDDs. Up to 18. People who buy HDDs that are say 22TB are crazy I think. Better to have redundant storage. I guess some might put those in a raid but that's really expensive. Maybe they have the money and that's fine but I'd rather not risk data: even with dual backups. Only recently I added the second backup disk. With the new server actually.
@madeindex the #MacBookPro #M4Max has an external (USB-C) HDD for backup. The #M1Max is bricked thanks to #Apple releasing their crapware #macOS ( #macOS26) knowing full well that in beta they were bricking devices. But once I get that repaired (DFU failed here) if Apple's so-called 'geniuses' can fix it it's still not worth an extra backup as it was used to set up the M4 Max. The M1 Max needs the keyboard replaced too. Thank goodness I got the M4 Max earlier this year!

That said - and I realize that this isn't a major flaw so much as a really-nice-to-have, but I'd really love it if they started offering the option of onboard cellular at some point.
They're powerful machines, but they could be a bit more portable.
The ad campaign - people doing their work from places of natural beauty or implausible oddball locations - practically writes itself.
It has been easy to bag on Apple's software UX foibles as of late, but I'd like to take a moment to shout out just how incredibly wonderful their hardware is now - particularly the MacBook Pro.
I've had my MBP M3 Max since it was released and it really is an incredible machine.
