All this AI fuzz is making me sick, especially if I compare it to actually game-changing new technology like, for example, JPEG XL.
The former is hyped so much but it’s a very dull and bloated concept, while the latter is a concrete, non-proprietary, and free standard.
Of course, AI is fuelled by billions and billions of vacuous investments, while JPEG XL not only flies under the radar, but its adoption was actively blocked by Google because it went against their corporate interest.
To be clear: technical innovation is not the solution, but it saddens me to see that what is truly valuable is overlooked because some vacuous torment nexus takes up all the energy, the time, and the funding.

If you haven’t used it before, image-set() is used in CSS in any place where you’d normally use an image. Here’s a simple example where the browser will use JPEG XL if it supports it, or JPEG if it doesn’t:

url("bg.jxl") type("image/jxl"),
url("bg.jpg") type("image/jpeg")
);
( you can also specify resolutions, e.g. url() 2x type() )
It’s really nice that we now have wide support for image-set() in browsers so that it’s possible to use JPEG XL in browsers that support it (with automatic fallback to other formats for browsers that don’t), even for cases like background images, which used to be a pain point when all we had was <picture>.
This is an example of the kinds of big wins that can be achieved through the #Interop Project.

some takeaways from being a volunteer speaker photographer at #why2025
1. take HIF (HEIF) files by default. taking 10 - 30 FPS of compressed raw (ARW) leads to way too large of datasets to manage. perhaps offer ARW if they want to work with compressed raw.
2. use appropriate gear, such as high-speed USB, for quick file management - which I did not have. use multiple SD/CFexpress cards for easier compartmentalization - which i did not have. create scripts for moving the data more quickly between devices/website.
3. create a public blog post or advertisement to be clear about the voluntary mission and privacy upfront so there is less ambiguity.
4. establish a website that allows easier photo sharing, not just ssh'ing zip files to my blog.
i'm thinking about writing to @CCC asking if it could be appropriate to organize a group of photographers for their events.
why am i doing this? because when i spoke at DEF CON, i didn't have anyone to take professional photos of me, for me, at the critical moment of public speaking, to document the life-long memory. i want everyone to be able to have the option of using great images from such incredible events
