Thought about starting a version for hacker camps, Harmonic Ancient Cosmic Kinetics, aiming for #why2025 was too soon... https://mastodon.scot/@ultrazool/113384772703696422
One completed #WHY2025 tetrapod. This might be comforting in a similar way to a weighted blanket (it weighs >2kg). Or it might be useful for managing extremely localised soil erosion

The slides of my talk at #WHY2025 "Safeguarding Research & Culture: Save public data from the digital bookburnings!" are now online:

Recording should be available in the coming days.

Last week I participated in the quadrennial large Dutch hacker camp, #WHY2025. It was a blast.
It's interesting how many ways there are to experience it: I helped organize in the Info team, hung out at the #NixOS Village, gave a talk about the IT infrastructure at Museum @EICAS , went into a rabbithole debugging the Linux kernel (more on that in a separate toot), joined jamsessions, caught some talks, met many interesting folks, and much more. Serious topics (like voting systems, global politics and security) mix with more lighthearted fun (Flamethrowers, Faxe Kondi and heaps of colorful LEDs). From the 40th anniversary of @phrack to teenagers finding their own way.
I think what unites us all is the sense of curiosity and creativity.

If you can't do that or you have no good idea: don't do it. There is no pressure on anyone to deliver a "badge" at a hacker event. It is a non-tradition.
Also: where is the creativity here? Hacker scenes find themselves to be super-creative (and they are) but often they fail to think from the user to the device not vice versa.
If you start with technology you will end up with technology. but there is no value in it itself.
Instead start with a problem and then solve it.

Technology for the sake of technology is unexciting. We have enough technology around. Nobody wakes from sleep because of yet another wireless device, some blinking LEDs or quirky retro-beep-beep-sounds.
If hackers want to make an impact on society they have to think like real people. Have a look at human behaviour, at social dynamics. Then understand what drives people, then look at problems, then solve them.
But please please please no more useless plain retro computer devices.
I returned from #WHY2025, quite happy but also exhausted, yesterday afternoon.
I was greeted by a happy family - and a broken dishwasher.
Still high on Hacker Spirit, I decided to take it apart just in case I found something obvious I could fix. Who cares that I know nothing of electronics? I'm a software dev with a screwdriver!
Two zip-ties later - leftovers from the dome we constructed at camp - the dishwasher is working again.
Tiny leftovers from WHY, making life that little bit better...

I keep wondering why there seems to be so much infighting with the dutch hacker community (the warehouse team responsible for dealing with collecting all the stuff at takedown after the event also rage-quitted on the last day of the event) instead of working together.
While there is not a lack of conflict in CCC-events the scene usually finds solutions not creating any bad blood.
However, the new badge team was apparently picking up the pieces trying to finish in time.
