Another tech co-op? Yes, but this is a little different. Privacy and security? Sure - though it's not just about your privacy and security, but everyone's (after all, none are free until all are free). There are alternative browsers led by people not friendly to the #LGBTQ+ community, there are sustainable computer companies with ties to hate speech. This isn't about that. This is about promoting alternatives to #BigTech at the intersection of #privacy #security #sustainability and #inclusivity.
So a little while back, @laura wrote an excellent introductory book on accessibility and inclusive design called Accessibility for Everyone for A Book Apart.
Then, A Book Apart folded and the authors managed to get their rights back.
And yesterday, after Laura put a huge amount of work adapting the book into a beautiful website she built using Kitten*, we republished the book under Small Technology Foundation Press.
You can read it for free at:

As someone who is totally blind, the Fediverse is the only place where I have ever been able to follow people such as photographers, artists, or even those who post pictures of their cats or the food they ate. The reason is that most of them use alt text. They take the time to describe the images that my screen reader can't recognise. Some write the descriptions themselves, and others use tools such as altbot. Some worry that their descriptions aren't good enough, especially when they are new at this. Let me assure you, not only are they good enough, they are extremely appreciated! If the rest of the world thought as you did, it would be a much better place. Don't hesitate to ask if you're unsure of something, but never think that we don't notice your effort.

Getting this out of Google's paws is an unalloyed good. Blockly is a wonderful way for kids to ease into script-based programming. I've used it many times in lessons for kids as young as 8.
@mttaggart I was pleasantly surprised to see screen-reader support be a prominently mentioned roadmap item in this announcement, and I look forward to seeing where this goes. Up until this point, accessible alternatives to block-based coding have existed in the form of cost-prohibitive hardware devices (CodeJumper, ET AL). So having a generally-available nonvisual approach to this teaching method will be a major win for sure.
