I got a scythe and I’m learning how to use it. There is an area on my property that is too wet to mow all winter and most of spring but then the grass is too long for the mower or even a line trimmer.

Mostly I’m left handed but somewhat ambidextrous, particular batting or golfing, so I can use this right handed scythe until I can somehow get my great grandfather’s scythe over from the US (it is well over 100 years old and in nearly perfect condition).

Secret I’ve found is to use my left hand to make the scythe rotate around the handle for the right hand as I twist my body as well. Otherwise pushing too much with only the right hand and doesn’t cut the grass well. Getting better and better plus ending up with nice bunches of grass that you can simply pick up and stack. I’ll need to make hay mounds for my own Monet image.

A few of a section of long grass that is uncut and probably 30-40cm high. Top of the photo is framed with a palm branch handing down. The foreground grass has been mowed some time back and has some dried grass and uneven new grass

A section of the grass has been cut with the scythe and cut grass stacked in a loose mound. This photo is from a different angle - more to the side of the first photo.

Roughly the same position as the first photo with more than a third but less than a half of the grass in this section cut. There are two mounds with the closer one nearly 1m high and the scythe resting against it.

"It's quite amazing how really good it is to get a tool suited to a purpose."

Great video of Beth Pearsall using a scythe in the same Country Life story;

"Unlike modern-day mowers and weedeaters, it has no numbing vibrations or sputtering fumes and almost helps her meditate as she swings it over the weeds, she told Country Life."

Tried to sharpen my scythe blade. Only managed to make it worse. Again. I understand what is supposed to happen and I know how to use a hammer. The peening jig was supposed to make this “easy.”

I’m out of pre-sharpened blades I can use until they stop holding an edge. Going to the knife sharpening event at the hardware store isn’t how this works.

I’ve been looking for an in person workshop but none of the ones I’ve found are in the US. #gardening #mowing #scythe
