Wow. 1 of 200 just can't extract themselves from the failed anti-freedom rhetoric they've been expertly baited into, by more than a decade of corporatist Culture War strategy;

https://www.1of200.nz/podcast/1200-s2e166-online-political-violence

These muppets are champing at the bit to reduce fundamental human rights to special privileges for people who aren't naughty. With allies on the left like this, who needs the right to torpedo democracy?

Catch up or shut up.

"It's so refreshing to be able to talk honestly about these things now that everybody [here has] left politics ..."

#RoryStewart, 2025

https://alastaircampbell.org/2025/08/150-nicola-sturgeon-what-really-happened-in-the-scottish-referendum-part-2/

Well, isn't that a revealing statement?

Yes, I did unsub from The Rest is Politics in protests at their shameless shilling for HP. But I stumbled on this 2-part interview with former SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon, which intrigues my Scottish diaspora roots, and it's well worth a listen.

Last week, Pat and Chewie of BHN did a fun analysis of the spat between The Pratform and the BSA, and between Sean Plunkett and them;

https://creators.spotify.com/pod/profile/pat-brittenden/episodes/BHN-Barb-Edmonds-LIVE-at-9pm--Plunket-meltdown-continues--Luxon-on-ZB-e39p3h8

I mostly agree with the distinctions they draw; they and John Campbell are "broadcasters", BHN and the Breakfast are "shows", and TVNZ is a "broadcasting company". So far, so good.

But here's where it gets... well... hairy. Which broadcasting company is accountable to the BSA for Big Hairy News?

Oh the irony. An interview with TimBL about the difference between the "good internet" and the "bad internet", preceded by an ad for HP. One of leading proponents of the cancerous cartel style of corporate growth that led to the "bad internet";

https://alastaircampbell.org/2025/09/153-the-man-who-invented-the-internet-tim-berners-lee/

Frustrating too that all TimBL seems to want to criticise about the DataFarmers is the addictiveness of their platform. Not surveillance advertising, or anticompetitive tactics, etc.

Listening to Chlöe Swarbrick talking with Zack Polanski on his Bold Politics podcast;

https://shows.acast.com/bold-politics-with-zack-polanski/episodes/68eeb23658893bb6e3e57b1a

When they talked about the post-war welfare state and the neoliberal coup, it got me a bit weepy.

Anyone born from 1980 on, has one advantage over the rest of us; for them, this state of decay is how it's always been. They haven't had to watch successive govts take a wrecking ball to the caring society and close-knit communities they grew up with.

Next time you run across someone from the 'everyone has ADHD these days' chorus, consider giving them a link to this episode of The Elephant podcast about ADHD. Worth a listen;

"Because to me the Starbucks logo says toilet as much as it says coffee."

https://flightless-bird.simplecast.com/episodes/toilets-n12ZDVrt

Their stores do have a consistent background smell of baby vomit for some reason, but the coffee itself isn't bad enough that I'd associate it with toilet.

Bill Maher prides himself on avoiding ideological capture. But his take on Gaza is pretty much the standard, ahistorical IDF apologetics, and his comments on trans rights are similarly the standard Republican talking points.

I do agree with him though that people need to be free to express this stuff, otherwise they end up thinking they're part of a "silent majority" rather than diseducated by electoralist propaganda.

The Tories are virtue signalling around climate policy to shore up their rural vote;

https://www.rnz.co.nz/podcast/focusonpolitics?share=0fdf10db-6e5c-4b60-a29d-0acfd02449e0

But considering all the things they could have done - and that ACT and Winston First would have done given the chance - what they've done is pretty weak tea. Which suggests a significant majority of kiwis support strong climate protection policy, and NatACT First know it.

A fascinating discussion on Midweek MediaWatch about whether or not Sean Plunket's digital soapbox The Platform is under the jurisdiction of the Broadcasting Standards Authority;
https://www.rnz.co.nz/podcast/mediawatch?share=7308019f-a654-4741-b3db-b6f3edb1fce2

Plunket is a contemptible human being who platforms hateful concern trolling, in the style of Cameron Slater. So on one level I'd love to see the BSA throw the book at him. But as with the case against Slater, there are deeper principles at stake here.

In theory there's a third position, market first. But in practice housing markets are regulated (or not) to optimise for providing housing or profit. People who claim to care about "free markets" as an end in themselves are using this as an excuse to optimise markets for profit.

It's particularly relevant to housing that according to what Adam Smith actually wrote, what "free markets" were meant to be free of was rents, not regulations.

The reckons about housing policy I posted yesterday were inspired by an interview on the Dystopia Now podcast with housing rights advocate and former San Francisco local politician Dean Preston;

https://sites.libsyn.com/566555/the-astroturf-agenda-with-dean-preston

Current Affairs interviewed him back in 2021, a couple of years after he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors;

San Francisco Socialist Dean Preston Debunks “YIMBY” Propaganda

Preston, a DSA member who serves on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, joins us to discuss the Bay Area housing crisis and its solutions, as well as the bizarre developer-backed astroturf movement waging war on him.

"It's worth following ... the brave voices of people like Breaking the Silence, who speak for former [IDF] reservists who speak out and give testimony to what they saw and what they were required to do. Whether in the detention centres or on the field ... in the war zones."

This week's MediaWatch dived into the online safety debate. Starting about 23 minutes in, after a story about news coverage of Silver Ferns coaching drama, and a roundup of the midweek edition;

https://www.rnz.co.nz/podcast/mediawatch?share=33fb446b-4f18-4f7d-8327-ddd5cf4bf4ab

It's a mixed bag. As with so much commentary on this, our genuine concerns about civil liberties and human rights kind of get lumped in with the self-serving opinions of reputation launderers for DataFarms (including ACT MPs).

#Podcasts are one of the most critical open web media formats we have - and needs to be defended and kept open from closed silos like YiuTube or Spotify. And integrating it further into the open social web. One of the most important battles for the open web going forward. #podcasting2 https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/lists/most-powerful-people-podcasting-2025/

This is a great interview with Iain McGilchrist, an Oxford literary scholar, and a doctor in psychiatry and neuroscience;

Finding meaning in a world gone mad – Iain McGilchrist | Local Futures Podcast

Iain McGilchrist is an Oxford literary scholar, and a doctor in psychiatry and neuroscience. A champion of holistic thinking, Iain’s tour-de-force book The Master and His Emissary, along with his more recent The Matter with Things, have transformed academic and popular understanding not only of the human brain, but also of the importance of a fundamental worldview shift. His works sustain an in-depth critique of reductionism, and unfold different approaches for understanding who we are and what the world is.    In this episode, Iain’s research on the differences between the left and right hemispheres provide the backdrop for discussions of the human experience of the sublime, and how important that experience is if we are to reestablish social and ecological balance in the world. He discusses his long-standing appreciation for the local, the place-based and the natural, suggesting that these offer avenues towards right-hemisphere aspects of our experience – aspects which have been neglected to our detriment.   To watch the video of this series, visit: Planet Local Voices interview series. The music for this series is ‘Pines and Violet’, by Sky Toes.
