With the gardening season done and all the tools cleaned and tucked away, BeetBear is leaving me on my own to get all the apple trees pruned over the winter. He's napping by the fire with instructions to wake him up for the Wassailing later on.

It's been a while coming, but we are now starting to harvest carrots that we planted in April. This variety is "MoonRaker" and they average about 4 or 5 inches in length (100-110 mm). All planted in a pot ~ 18 inches/ 450mm in diameter and 16 inches/ 400mm deep. It took A LOT of watering to keep them happy during the summer heat, but we now will be able to harvest carrots as needed almost to December. 😀

Here is the monthly photo looking up the allotment. Today's visit was the first for a month due to health reasons so it will have to do for August and September. The runner beans have finished cropping, the potatoes have been lifted and the wallflower plants in the foreground are nearly ready to be moved back home. We have started picking the apples (out of shot) with a view to making cider next month.

Well most of the garden is done for the year, but the tomatoes, peppers and eggplant are still going strong. This was the very last of the sunburst squash, as the plants are now in the compost, hopefully cooking out all the pests remaining on the leaves and in the stems. 😀

Squash cleanup: BeetBear goes on ahead to rescue any remaining squashes for sharing out. He also checks the few blossoms that are left to make sure any dozing bees are encouraged to move over to the eggplant flowers so Dad doesn't ruin their day with the chopper. We're about 75% done now so one more push tomorrow will finish it up. Just tomatoes, peppers and eggplant left producing now. Season has flown by! 😀

This from our admin: "The Fediverse groups feature offered by gup[.]pe is no longer available, and the domain name has been acquired by a third party. We are suspending the domain from toot.wales and any group you were following will be removed. "
Looks like the @gardening group is gone so I will no longer be adding the group mention to my posts.
Perhaps someone knows of other gardening groups we can use?
Things are winding down now, but BeetBear still found veg. to share with the neighbors today. It made our day when a young lady and her grandma stopped by with a thank-you note for us. It's very dry again. We have had no rain since a light shower on 20-Aug. Tomatoes are heavily mulched, so they're ok. Peppers, eggplant and yellow squash seem to be holding up, too. Will probably start to "deconstruct" the corn patch tomorrow. 😀

Went out early to get some picking done and had some more to share out. Cukes and zucchini have about had it now but the yellow sunburst squash is still rolling along like it was mid-July. Temps are still in the 90°F (32°C) range so not nice in the sun. We DID finally have a storm roll through just after noon that dropped ¾ inch (19mm) of rain in about half an hour. Looks like more on the way. At last.

The tomatoes are finally coming in large quantities. Had enough to put out some surplus today. Had a lovely note left in the cart this morning. Did you ever notice that the largest and best tomatoes always grow deep within the support cages and wedged between the cage and a large stem in such a way as it's impossible to extract it without ending up with a handful of mush? Happens here all the time... More corn soon! 😀

Managed some more surplus veg. for the neighborhood today. Air is still smokey, but not as bad as yesterday. AQI is down to 107 from the 150 it was yesterday. Still unhealthy, but better.

We topped off a beautiful day here by resuming our corn-fest. Probably enough left of the first planting to get us one more meal. Second planting should be ready in another 2 days or so. I figure we'll get to about 95 or 6 ears from the first planting, if the skunks stay away! Meal also included roast sausage, peppers and cherry tomatoes and more raspberries n' cream. Too full to move..
