Here's this week's data for Project Feeder Watch week number 15. Severe winter weather continues with VERY cold temps, high winds and lots of snow cover. We had 19 species and 116 individuals this week. Favorite sighting of the week was a very scruffy-looking Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker that stopped by several times. As always the Carolina Wrens continue to amaze me that they can survive this climate and still look feisty!

Here's this week's data for Project Feeder Watch week number 15. Severe winter weather continues with VERY cold temps, high winds and lots of snow cover. We had 19 species and 116 individuals this week. Favorite sighting of the week was a very scruffy-looking Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker that stopped by several times. These are the 'Witches’ Stairs' commonly found in old New England homes.
It is believed that the design was thought to confuse or trap witches, preventing them from easily climbing the stairs due to the staggered pattern.

I offer here a selection of Apple and Gooseberry Birch Sap seltzer, Black Currant and Thoroughwort Birch Sap seltzer, and Mulberry and Nettle Birch Sap seltzer. all quite refreshing.

With the gardening season done and all the tools cleaned and tucked away, BeetBear is leaving me on my own to get all the apple trees pruned over the winter. He's napping by the fire with instructions to wake him up for the Wassailing later on.

It's been a while coming, but we are now starting to harvest carrots that we planted in April.This variety is "MoonRaker" and they average about 4 or 5 inches in length (100-110 mm). All planted in a pot ~ 18 inches/ 450mm in diameter and 16 inches/ 400mm deep. It took A LOT of watering to keep them happy during the summer heat, but we now will be able to harvest carrots as needed almost to December. 😀

Well most of the garden is done for the year, but the tomatoes, peppers and eggplant are still going strong. This was the very last of the sunburst squash, as the plants are now in the compost, hopefully cooking out all the pests remaining on the leaves and in the stems. 😀

He also checks the few blossoms that are left to make sure any dozing bees are encouraged to move over to the eggplant flowers so Dad doesn't ruin their day with the chopper. We're about 75% done now so one more push tomorrow will finish it up. Just tomatoes, peppers and eggplant left producing now. Season has flown by! 😀
