Senator Paula Simons🇨🇦
@Paulatics@mstdn.ca  ·  activity timestamp 4 weeks ago

Today, senior executives from CBC/RadioCanada came to testify before the Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications. I had the chance to ask a lot of questions. But I made sure to ask why the CBC is still committed to X - and why they haven't investigated Mastodon (and Bluesky). Here's my exchange with CEO Marie-Philippe Bouchard and Editor in Chief Brodie Fenlon. #CBC #Mastodon #X #Bluesky #SRC #Canada #cdnpoli #SenateofCanada #TRCM #CanadianBroadcastingCorporation #SocialMedia https://youtu.be/lJUeQZlvD-E?si=msTknV5VyaI-drCD

@brodiefenlon when will CBC News join us & lead by example? Sen. Paula Simons asked:
“Why is CBC still on X — full of hate & disinfo — & not exploring Mastodon, a non-commercial, Canadian-friendly space for public media?”
NPR 🇺🇸 & ABC Australia 🇦🇺 left X, proving you can walk from billionaire-run chaos & still reach ppl. Let’s ask CBC to join the ppl’s social media — the Fediverse. Boost & tag @CBCNews to follow their own EIC here!

Honourable Senator
et al.

in the Public Interest I do urge you to invest the role in https://www.publicmediaalliance.org/public-broadcasters-create-public-spaces-incubator/ too !

All of this is very confusing to me, we did lots of voluntary and free Open Source work towards the fediverse cause the project is committed to federation since we had this idea. Many volunteers coded, the code became "hidden" later but oversight like @leonido still assured it will federate.

It feels a bit criminal !

PS
After the work, in 2024, we had a talk at Public Spaces Amsterdam :

@Paulatics 'it's about a return on investment' is such a nonsensical thing to say.

Why don't they just say: They don't want to take the time to operate their own instance. They don't want to learn something new. "It's too new for us." (even though Mastodon isn't "a fad" and it's been around for almost ten years now)

"platforms come and platforms go"
Excuses, excuses. Anything to avoid saying, "We don't know what that is."

The correct response: "We don't know much about Mastodon, but we'll look into that and we'll have an answer for you soon."

@Paulatics Doesn't appear to me that they've thought very hard about this nor that they have a strategy at all. Platforms don't come and go and they are free. And they owe us the outreach. So hire some students to do the work as that's where the young people are.
