The thing about the myth of white supremacy is that it demands loyalty, even when that loyalty comes at the expense of your own health, livelihood, and survival.
According to recent data, 57% of ACA (Affordable Care Act) enrollees live in Republican-run states and 45% of all enrollees identify as Republican, compared to just 35% Democrat and 20% Independent.
Let that sink in.
That means a significant number of people rely on, and benefit from, a policy their own political ideology has spent more than a decade demonizing and trying to destroy.
Jonathan M. Metzl, in Dying of Whiteness, made it plain: white Americans, particularly in conservative strongholds, routinely choose the myth of whiteness over their own wellbeing.
The promise of belonging to a “superior” group, even symbolically, is so seductive that many will quite literally die to preserve it.
This is what makes the myth so dangerous and enduring.
It convinces white folx that collective whiteness is worth more than individual wellness.
It whispers that power is more valuable than protection.
That dominance is safer than care.
But here’s the truth, the only ones benefitting from your loyalty to the myth are those who profit from your suffering…politically, economically, and socially.
That’s not irony.
That’s indoctrination.
