This is a Ruckers mother-and-child virginal—a 17th-century keyboard instrument with a second, smaller instrument built into it, tuned an octave higher. The “child” could be pulled out to play duets or set on top of the “mother” to add a jangly, buzzing color to the main sound—a Renaissance-era layering trick, centuries before mixing desks. Antwerp instrument makers were doing this in the 1600s.

Remember, the administration has attempted a LOT of outrageous things. Thus far the courts, including the Supreme Court, have allowed some of them but rejected others. No one can predict with certainty how things will ultimately play out with the vote-by-mail restrictions, and it is by no means over or a foregone conclusion.
One thing that's certain: The syllabus for my elections course this semester is already a work of fiction, and will no doubt have little relationship to what we cover each week.

Today some strangers on a train did me a kindness.
I’d gone to see a friend and we had walked 10 miles, in addition to the 2 I’d walked to see him. I’d not slept well last night, and feeling a little weary on the train home, I’d fallen asleep.
The people who had sat opposite me noticed I’d not woken when the train terminated, as they waited for their onward train on the same platform. They told the guard to wake me so I would not find myself on the same train heading back the way we had come!
…I woke to find the train filling up with people heading back to Brighton. And got off in the nick of time. (It had terminated at my stop.)
I thanked both the guard and the kind strangers, and said I hoped they got their bag back, because earlier in the journey I had heard them on the phone talking to a restaurant where they had left their bag behind.
I hope things worked out well for them 🙏
