@boris because I had the type of parents who would tell me, "Go look it up"
I went and looked it up.

"In France, the entrée slowly came to be associated primarily with its position in the meal rather than the composition of its dishes. Despite the objections of various food authorities who insisted on retaining the classical meaning of the word,[30] the term entrée came to refer to the first course of the meal, a small dish that precedes the main course (plat principal) in a three-course meal.[a] The "new" use of the term, now common almost worldwide, is a return to the literal meaning of the word and a partial return to the medieval arrangement of the meal.
In the United States and parts of English-speaking Canada, though, the older understanding of the entrée as a substantial meat course persisted, and the word came to refer to the principal dish of the meal.[31][32] In the 21st century, the use of the word entrée in North American menus began to decline, being replaced by terms like "main course" or other terms appropriate to the culinary tradition of a given restaurant or cookbook."
@codebyjeff the whole thing could have delightfully more footnotes.
Versions of this legislation already failed in Australia, failed in the UK, so of course Luxon wants to do it and have it fail here too. 🙄
Evidence-based decisions? Not under their watch!

@pezmico National is all about these "vibe" laws.
Never bother to research them
Sometimes I visit BlueSky and... it's not that folk on there are bad in any profound way, but I always leave the place with a sort of unquantifiable misanthropy. Something about the place just makes me want to escape to the wilds. I don't know whether it's the omnipresent Americanism or the fact that all posts take the form of a critique on a critique on a critique, but the atmosphere is just crushingly claustrophobic. It seems like everybody is desperate to convince themselves that they're part of some intellectual priesthood. Just exhausting stuff.
I like fedi. It is not perfect, and it has its own strains of mad cow disease, but it's also comfortable, like a pair of shoes one has owned for a decade
AI companies see words as interchangeable and have zero clue how to judge the “quality” of writing.

Satire on HN can be quite subtle
@mattdarveniza i was never a big fruit guy, but since taking the mounjaro ive been eating so much of it, maybe there's a connection, dunno (fruit is healthier than chips or chocolate, that's for sure)
@decryption Yeah that's an interesting effect! Like seeking snacks is a pretty ingrained human behaviour, but all the high sugar crap kind of creates a malformed habit. If your body is demanding less sugar but still seeking snacks, I guess fruit makes sense as a fallback.
I had it ingrained as kid to seek fruit since that's all our parents ever had in the house, which in hindsight is lucky I guess
Morning Sheep Time
Off-brand digestives this morning so insertion a bit patchy. Brambles only accepting his after an extended robbery attempt. No problems with the boss, Dom and Buster of course.

@bagder did those bots use curl to fetch curl.se? :)
Making some cool effects by sampling points on curves and using those points to define a complex function.
An alpine pasture full of crocuses (probably colchicum montana rather than proper crocuses) with the peaks of big and little astazu in the background (little astazu appearing to be higher from this viewpoint).
