Le changement a beau avoir lieu, les habitudes et la réputation ne bougent pas en conséquences. Dans l'entre deux, on fait des thunes, et on bénéficie d'une réputation devenue trompeuse.

Yes indeed focus on the craft will return, as will the recognition that truly novel ideas and approaches will not emerge from beige and bloated vibe code, itself often more expensive to review. But there will be a lot of pain and life eating PR's before that reality catches up with the mania of upper management.

My brain is trying to fit 'subscription model' into this somehow (because it translated your modern sisyphus analogy into having to constantly push smaller, more affordable monthly packages uphill, rather than just buying one and pushing it uphill until obsolesence and then having to purchase another at the bottom of the hill - it's not a perfect analogy). So far, it's just telling me to say...... Monthly subscrisyphus. Which doesn't resolve or work at all and is awful and is making my brain itch.

- Ils me préviennent qu’un domaine va être renouvelé.
- Deux jours avant le renouvellement, j’entame la démarche chez OVH pour y migrer ce domaine
- Gandi prend son temps pour valider le transfert
- Et avant que le transfert soit terminé (au bout de deux jours), je reçois une facture de Gandi pour le renouvellement automatique ?
- Le domaine n’est pas encore transféré chez OVH, l’interface de Gandi ne mentionne pas de renouvellement de leur côté… mais la facture existe

ok. here's a reason why "implement a hash table in C" is a good exercise: it is completely impossible to avoid learning how to design a mathematical hash function in order to satisfy the "simple" public API

If we're talking long-term, we're still up for some architecture changes. Currently the labs can (still somehow...) burn piles of money so they do. Once they feel the squeeze, we'll see some serious experimentation in what's possible. (Where's my small coding model which hasn't been trained on Harry Potter fanfic? Where's the near-linear recurrent version?)
That will hopefully affect the inference energy use and pricing.

@fennix probably right. i don't know how business works, but if i had raised 400 million dollars to make a product that is literally just a fucking download portal with a faceted browse CRUD app strapped on top then maybe my.... third? hire would have been a security person to lead securing the fucking WHOLE THING THE BUSINESS IS and given them idk like 1/5 of the personnel budget to retain a team because that's the WHOLE THING THE BUSINESS IS and if it's fucking UNSAFE TO USE and some skid model can accidentally hack our everything then there is no business.

but that just goes to show how little i know about business, because providing no service and having all your shit be broken and hacked to bits does not seem to be a problem for most tech companies.

OK, so I'm kind of buzzing right now.

35+ years ago a dear friend, who is still a dear friend, gave me a mix tape of contemporary techno and electronica he put together. He introduced me to so much music but this tape in particular was a touchstone for me in my musical taste formation as an 18 year old. I must have listened to it hundreds and hundreds of times, so many good moments, stoned or tripped out, after clubs and parties. It is in my DNA. But I never had a tracklist.

Sadly, in the mists of time this was lost, like the One Ring. I have been trying to reconstruct this tape over the last 20 years or so. Whenever I stumble across a track (I always know instantly if I hear one) I immediately seek out a vinyl copy. It's a genuine obsession of mine. Like rebuilding a classic car, but without a blueprint.

So about 6 months ago, another dear friend**, from back then too, said he found a tape cassette in a box in his parents attic. One side was some of the KLF, Chill Out album, the other was labelled Beepy Bits. This struck a chord with him as I'd gone on about the lost tape called Beepy Bits so he mentioned it. He's an audio mastering engineer and music producer, but didn't have a tape deck. Until now.

He's sent me the audio, it's incomplete, but is the first half of the tape, and frankly when I played it the Proustian rush of hearing this relic from my past was quite incredible. He's managed to fill in a number of gaps for me and just transported me to 18 year old Mats bedroom.

The search for the One Ring* continues, but fate has brought it much closer.

* Sauron was the good guy right?
** My mate doesn't look like Gollum but does have an Elvish quality
