Native HLS support means smoother playback and less reliance on clunky plugins. That’s great for usability—but there’s a catch.

HLS is not an open standard. It’s Apple’s proprietary format, and now Google is baking it even deeper into the web. That pulls us further away from truly open alternatives like WebM and AV1, which avoid royalties and tight corporate control.

Progress? Yes.
A step toward a more closed web? Also yes.
