⚠️ DO NOT BUY: LG’s Spyware TVs, Monitors, and Wiretapping Concerns
The attached #video details the absolute #privacy horror of LG #television and #monitor products, that install #adware without consent, have #AI integration, and a horrible privacy policy..
> LG recently forced upon us an app install loaded with #McAfee adware through a #Windows update. We found that this has been happening to tons of users, made worse by LG's shady history with #TV's that instruct buyers to inform house visitors of third-party microphones in their living room. At no point in the adware or application install did LG or Microsoft ask us for consent or permission to install the software and enable its various permissions. On monitors ranging 1 day old in our office to 3 years old, we've been able to replicate these issues -- including on the LG 34GX900A-B that we just bought (and have now returned, following #spyware concerns).
@janxdevil I was genuinely curious about your intuition (while also being annoyed at the 'splaining). Linguistically speaking, neither word actually pins down the subject definitively here.
Nonetheless, using the contrast you flag, the reason I like "undesirable" better is that the question of who decides what is a good output and what isn't is also contested. It's not just the immediate user who is relevant.
@emilymbender
Great read, but I see little hope for success. Maybe a small dent in the onslaught, better than nothing, to be sure.

As this thread is slowing down (but feel free to keep the questions coming), this is also a great time to plug the public "Linguistics of Emojis" Zotero library, which we maintain. Over 300 scientific works on the linguistics of emojis - check it out! 🤓 #emojis #linguistics #WorldEmojiDay https://www.zotero.org/groups/2613859/linguistics_of_emojis/library
This is also definitely not a good day to take up the German practice of regular "house burping" and opening all the windows a few times a day. Happy to live in a hermetically sealed microenvironment at the moment. (AQI was about 25 in my bedroom when it was over 400 ouside this morning).
@mattblaze as a German, let me just ask, wtf is house burping?
Do you mean the honored tradition of Stoßlüften?

PEOPLE. DON'T TAKE YOUR SHOES OFF ON THE BUS THEN PUT YOUR FEET ON THE SEATS. There is a gossamer veil betwixt us and the beasts. And this behaviour belongs with the snufflers and the grunters, in undergrowth and mud. Not on my journey home from work when I am doing my best to human.
@TheBreadmonkey similarly, people hanging their bare feet out in the aisle on planes deserve to get them whacked by the flight attendant's trolley. Gross.
Trying to get past here and your manky feet are in the way? Nope 🤢

I do believe we live in the stupidest of times.
How bad is the air in DC today? The smoke detector in Aldi is going off. Not because there is a fire, but because outside air got inside.

Before anyone else sends me a message saying "You spelled Fawlty Towers wrong" yes congrats, you got the joke
@cwebber yeah, it is spelled flowery twats.
Your major home repairs have an AI's bad advice as its root cause
My major home repairs have a boomer's overconfidence as its root cause
We are not the same
... okay actually these are admittedly pretty similar
@researchfairy I mean, you can at least understand how someone consulting an AI could think they were getting it right.
Boomers had tons of DIY focused magazines, TV shows (many of which aired on free channels!), books, video series' they could have borrowed from the library...
The issues with my house can be explained away by 30+ years of landlord specials though. Never underestimate how badly someone can fuck up an extremely basic job (like, say, repainting a wall) when they're trying to do it as cheaply as possible and don't actually care at all about the outcome. (Surprisingly, they didn't try to use poster paint, but the fuck-ups were baffling until I found out that my place has been a cheap rental for a long time.)
