@meljoann I’ve got everything filtered to hell and back, and still the rage baits slip through. Not sure how healthy social media is at all for humans. We didn’t evolve for this level of constant info exchange.
@awfulwoman same. I don’t have to worry about not being informed, it always reaches me despite the filters!
But it definitely helps that it’s kept to a minimum
So, the #GPEW results are in.
Out of all the UK people on Mastodon who:
- have been active in the past week
- and happened to spend time here while the poll below flowed through their timeline
- and clocked it
- and thought to vote in it
254 said they have voted for the Green Party of England and Wales at some point in the past.
Which is 365 fewer than voted Green in just my council ward 2 weeks ago
@urlyman you write:
"Out of all the UK people on Mastodon who:

I think your sample space may be relatively small. I don't see all posts by UK based members of the #Fediverse, not I expect do you, it is limited to who follows us (in your case 1800) and whether the post was then boosted by them (OK you did ask for boosts) and then by their followers in turn. You are relying on Snowball sampling.
It might have helped to encourage those in the UK who saw the post and have never voted Green to actually poll the negative, so at least you would know what proportion, of those reached, are sometime green voters but the total would still be limited by your reach.
And of course voting Green if you would otherwise have wanted to in a more PR system may be limited by the need to vote tactically to keep out Tories and now Reform and to whether there are Green candidates you would otherwise support who have a chance of getting elected.

I know this is a well intended workshop for government workers and policy makers, but this sounds so incredibly out of touch.

If you run a mastodon instance, it's time to patch. Some high severity security 🐜 🐞 🐝 got fixed today.

@cstross Dumb rando's nitpicking opinion, but while 1776-2026 makes for a nice round number, there's nothing in that scenario that makes 2026 special, so personally I'd say 1776 to December 12, 2000.
Just heard the first talk at the conference on reasoning and agency in AI at the Institute of Philosophy by Nick O’Shea. 🧵
https://www.sas.ac.uk/news-events/events/philosophy-ai-conference-2026-reasoning-agency-ai
He looked at outcome-directedness and goal-directedness in biological systems and compared them to AI systems. The crucial point was that both biological and current AI systems show can show outcome-directedness and goal-directedness, and both show capacities for improving themselves by finding “better” solutions to those outcomes or achieving those goals, but biological systems are forced, simultaneously, to find *both* new solutions and the resources to effect those solutions *simultaneously*. Current AI systems do not and this has implications for ‘doomsday scenarios’

Something that I find (morbidly) fascinating about having worked at senior-ish levels, and now working at far less senior levels for health reasons:
The utter lack of context when you get asked to do something, and the offense caused when you push back and say "what is it you're actually trying to get to?"
------
There's a coupla ways of asking for information from people whose job it is to actually get you that info.
1) "Hi, can you send me a list of all the products that sit under category Y"
Absolutely fucking rubbish. Especially if I don't know you. Chances of you asking the correct question are fairly limited, but if I send you the literal request, I'm going to get a "actually, can you add in....?"
2) "Hi, I work in department A. I'm trying to answer question B, for reason C. Could you send me product list Y? Does that work?"
Better. Gives me an in, and a reason to come back and say "Look, based on previous experience, do you want H, I and J, too? Most people do."
And I can actually be helpful.
@bagder Let's see if we can get a camera working before then!
@FrankGevaerts I have an HDMI input thing this year and an HDMI splitter, so ideally it will work out a little bit better this year

#OnThisDay, 21 May 1932, Amelia Earhart became the first woman - and only the second person - to fly solo and without stops across the Atlantic.
She lands unexpectedly in Ireland. There’s some wonderful images of her here: https://joecampbellart.com/2015/03/12/amelia-earhart-in-ireland-solo-atlantic-crossing-may-21st-1932/

@neil some of us like the chunky Kit Kat
I liked the KitKat Chunky when it was a proper slab of break-your-tooth-when-trying-to-bite-it KitKat.
The one I bought at the weekend was just a slightly larger normal-sized KitKat finger.
I think we could be a lot louder about the robust filtering options on Masto. Maybe even make it easier, more prominent in our clients.
Why should people like Tig have to give up the nicer side of social media: sharing exciting creative projects and having a laugh?
Always-on social media is a terrible place for “the news”. Misinformation, algo rage-baiting. Keeps your nervous systems on high alert, ALL the time. We’re brittle, anxious, exhausted… right when we need strength for IRL activism

@SamanthaJaneSmith @elifyalvac Thanks- it's down to the hard work of @meljoann that it happens.
I totally agree though Sammi, I love the diversity in the acts across the series and am endlessly inspired by all of them.
I would not have the spoons to do all the organising you’re doing, TOS! Thanks so much ✨
So heartwarming to have all these excellent quality streams happening 💜
