As Devi Sridhar (UEdinburgh) warns on the new variant of Ebola currently working its way across the DRC, given that we live in an interconnected world (as the Covid pandemic demonstrated all too well):
'If your neighbour’s house is on fire, you don’t wait & watch. You help to put it out before the fire spreads to yours. That’s the interconnected world we live in, and an important lesson for all politicians watching the crisis unfold'!
Google Search has launched its most significant update in years infused with generative AI.
• The search box dynamically expands and supports uploading photos & videos.
• You can now create search agents which run in the background and perform tasks like apartment hunting, shopping research or aggregating news.
• Search can now dynamically create UIs like interactive visuals, graphs or tables on the fly.
Glad I no longer work at Bing. This is a lot. 😮
@carnage4life welp, time to finally set the default search engine to something less absolutely insufferable on the couple browser profiles where I've been too lazy to do it already
Flohmarkt is federated decentralized classified ad software using ActivityPub. They showed off how you can use other fedi platforms (e.g. Mastodon) to interact with small ads and talk to the seller via direct messages.

It seems like every person born before 1980 has a baby photo of them being bathed in a kitchen sink and I have a theory that most of it stopped when people got dishwashers and realized it was a much more convenient way to clean their children.
@Alice this is why we need glass door dishwashers, to bring the foto tradition back.

"links will become an afterthought" is not even coded language for "the rest of the internet is merely training data and we will own the entire means of accessing information online"

The U.S. government asked the German government to take over and care for an U.S. citizen infected with Ebola.
They can’t care for their own citizens as the people constituting the current government viciously criticized the previous government for allowing an Ebola victim to come home and (upon taking over the government) slashed all Ebola prevention.
Don’t get me wrong: I am all for helping the victims of this dreadful illness. But the hypocrisy epidemic in the U.S. is also most worrisome.
The cemetery is where great songwriters go to decompose.
…Now that we’ve built it, I’m glad it exists. But it’s the wrong strategy for a more variable and more uncertain future.

@urlyman H'mmm... our offshore wind farm is visible from pretty much everywhere in the parish. It generates revenue of about £10,000 per hour, every hour. But not for us, we get none of that. Even the electricity connection from it goes to England, not here (which makes sense, we're energy rich, England isn't, but...)
I think offshore wind is good technology, you get much more laminar windflows and higher wind speed in open water. But if the people most affected are excluded, that's not good.
Wow some terrible reporting about Google's latest horrible ideas about how to distort information access in the name of "convenience" (or something):

@emilymbender yeah, even for someone who is pro-tech and interested in AI developments, this @TechCrunch piece read like a press release. It was journalistically extremely weak to the point I felt dumber for reading it.

There’s something about this photo that has sent me. It’s like a mirror of a culture just endlessly peering at and documenting its own death https://mastodon.art/@biodiversitypix/116605465571507065
But we have to be calm and steely-eyed about building an _extended series_ of battle victories. We must exercise discipline, use our energy and resources wisely. Borrowing a phrase from a friend, we must not squander time or effort on unnecessary irritants. We must plan for the long haul. 7/7
@heidilifeldman End the electoral monarchy: It’s an imperial presidency. Cut down the power of the executive, or a more competent authoritarian than Trump will use it to end democracy for good in 2036 latest.
Change your voting system from first-past-the-post to fractional, with much larger electoral areas to cut down the advantage of gerrymandering. Don’t elect 1 of 20 from a small area, elect 20 of 1000 from a larger area.
And kill Citizens United. Normal people have to run.
