Reminder: Being able to fly around the world is a huge privilege that over 70% of people in the world never get to enjoy.
@KimSJ Also note that the entire publishing industry runs on computers these days. Can't actually work without it—not just editing and typesetting but printing and physical book distribution and sales (think Amazon). If you take away computers from our current world literacy literally dies.
@cstross
Fair point. I guess that slightly depends on whether you interpret ‘work’ in the original question as ‘producing a work’ or ‘earning a living from what you do’. As you point out, the second interpretation makes digital essential.

“It's making me dumber for sure,” the fintech software developer told me. “It's like when we got cellphones and stopped remembering phone numbers, but it's grown to me mentally outsourcing ‘thinking’ in general. I feel my critical thinking and ability to sit and reason about a problem or a design has degraded because the all-knowing-dalai-llama is just a question away from giving me his take. And supposedly I tell myself ill just use it for inspiration but it ends up being my only thought. It gives you the illusion of productivity and expertise but at the end of the day you are more divorced from the output you submit than before.”

I’m still processing what’s going on in tech at the moment. I used to feel at home in that world. It used to feel incredibly creative and positive. Now it’s increasingly full of bugs, dark addicting patterns and AI slop.
I’m not sure how to change that. We need to provide a better vision for the future than what’s currently pushed by most tech companies. They have a lot of power and (e.g.) many politicians listen to them. That’s why different narratives are important.
Yes, you should put ALT text on any pictures posted on social media.
But the seeming glee with which some people jump on any pictures posted without it is a bit weird.
So, let me get this straight.
You walked into a spiderweb, destroyed the spiders home, scattered its dinner everywhere, and somehow, you’re the victim?

Did you know today's a special day? It's one of those that dearly need a special day to commemorate on, now more than ever. We shine the limelight on it today and need to remember it throughout the year. 1/2
Sooo I want to work on the FaceKit face tracking stuff on stream, but I obviously don't want to show my camera...
Any suggestions for "talking head" videos that are expressive and won't get me in copyright trouble? ^^
@V_Announcements I'm curious, what distro are you running? I promise I won't start a distro flame war.
@matt @V_Announcements If I remember correctly, its Debian.
Today is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia.
This year #IDAHOBIT explores the themes of democracy and the role LGBTQIA+ people and their rights play in signalling true democracy.
Here in the UK, we're seeing the safety of LGBTQ+ people decline rapidly. Data published earlier this week by ILGA-Europe now places the UK as 22nd in Europe for LGBTQ+ protections. In 2015, the UK led in these rankings.
We have to do more.
