@stefano The current AI-Hype is the greatest deskilling operation since someone came up with burning books. 😝

The “social media” platforms we demonize today are actually multiple suspects. danah boyd (@zephoria.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy) and Ben Werdmuller (@werd.io@bsky.brid.gy) have unpacked the term in ways that could have major benefits for both the child safety debate, and the case for democratic representation online. 1/6
Social media vs. parasocial me...
RE: https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/@stefano/116578781744142408
In my view, the modern world has produced a serious problem: half-knowledge. In this context, there is no doubt that the AI-trained intern is deemed 'more right' than the person with experience.
I have always appreciated the spirit of change in young people - I myself have been a proponent of change - but this confidence rooted in a profound ignorance of the subject matter worries me. I see it on social media, where everyone is an expert on every topic, and I see it in the professional world. Young or not.

Ooh. The show is hilariously great and you should watch it. Seriously. Really great.
In April 1994 I started working on the Opera browser with Geir Iversøy, my co-founder. I worked at Opera for 17 years, leaving it after disagreeing with investors about the way forward. Two years later I co-founded @Vivaldi with Tatsuki Tomita and Anne Stavnes. This was in 2013.
For more than 30 years we have provided alternatives to Big Tech. First with Opera and now with Vivaldi. The focus has always been quite different from our competitors. More features, more privacy, more flexibility. Lately it has also meant the choice to avoid things like Crypto and Blockchain, avoid integrating AI and avoid integrating surveillance. This is not given. Most of our competitors are building in one or more of the above.
If you like what we are doing and our stand, feel free to download Vivaldi. If you are already with us, please tell your friends.

Found out as I was trying to log the book I just finished that the #bookwyrm instance I was on, bookrastinating.com, is down, and apparently has been for close to two weeks... I do hope it comes back. #hugops to the admins. I know what it's like to maintain community infrastructure on your own time and dime. Sometimes life gets in the way of things.

@SonstHarmlos Au ja! 😀
DON'T WORRY EVERYONE it turns out we've all got *super powers*
Who wants to team up and form a Sinister Six style super team. What might our various styles be?
@TheBreadmonkey
My super A team would be able to:
Enter situations too awkward for any ordinary person using immunity from social cues.
Get out of tricky situations using rules and details too obscure for mere mortals to remember.
Find the sources of sounds nobody else even notices.
Build complex spreadsheets in a single sitting.
Convert boredom into energy through stimming.
Be the first to reply to questions on social media with a literal answer.

"I need the full DevOps workflow to publish the site."
"It's a static site. Here are the SFTP credentials to upload the files you have, which were generated by the client's SSG."
"You don't understand. I need to upload the site; I need the DevOps procedure."
"No, you don't understand. It's generated by BSSG; all you have to do is upload the output via SFTP into the FreeBSD jail and the deploy is automatic."
Silence.
"But how does the deploy bot handle it?"
Silence.
The person who hired him (as an intern) gets on the line:
"Just humor him, the kid is sharp-he's really good with AI!"
I tell him we're talking about two completely different things.
He fires back: "If you can't keep up with him, I think you need to update your skills. That's what we're paying you for."
And that was that. I've decided that for 80 Euros a year - while providing a dedicated FreeBSD jail, over 100GB of hosting, backups, monitoring, and custom BSSG tweaks - they can definitely find someone more "up to date" elsewhere.
@stefano The current AI-Hype is the greatest deskilling operation since someone came up with burning books. 😝
@mms In fact I'm not a programmer. I'm a sysadmin that, from time to time, writes some (terrible) code.
And BSSG is Bash - is it programming or SysAdmin-ing? 😆
@stefano I think the correct term is "dev ops"
imo trump is the wildcard here. both charles and netanyahu have cancer and netanyahus death is the catalyst for the end of "israel" for sure. and the Almighty loves his pranks so bolsonaro is gonna live to be 105
@RussellsBarbershopQuartet Israel has an array of self-conceptions as a nation-state unrelated to or opposed to Bibi that are definitely going to survive and get a boost from his death. There's not going to be a political or structural void for things to collapse into.
Like, /possibly/ the piece of Bibi that will be irreplaceable is his ability to represent the far-right ("Judeia And Samaria" West-Bank settlers, Kahanists, etc.) while still being legitimately elected (so still being compatible with the people who fundamentally believe in Israel as a democratic project they are engaged in),
and so without him the far-right will... split from the democratic process and do a civil war?
But I don't see that as likely.
