“This study shows that…. nostalgia evoked by Studio Ghibli films significantly foster a sense of exploration and calm in life, as well as a feeling of mastery and skill, and purpose and meaning, hence ultimately contributing positively to one’s overall happiness in life. https://games.jmir.org/2025/1/e76522 #art
@Sheril Grave of the Fireflies is probably the saddest movie I have ever seen. 👽 🖖
"Kathy, I'm lost," I said, though I knew she was sleeping
"I'm empty and aching and I don't know why"

@markwyner @Codeberg @aphyr they are really unloading both barrels into their own butthole and taint area lately
I'm actually making progress with my book manuscript again, after all this time.
I hope I will be able to finish my corrections by June 20th, so that I can proofread it during my vacation.
@juergen_hubert oh is your period of Extreme Real Life coming to an end? Congrats on the upcoming well-deserved vacation!

As I was heading home, I was listening to the radio for a bit. The host said something that made me think:
"I won't read the comments, because I've been studying and living what I talk about for thirty years, and I'm full of doubts. Almost everyone who comments, by contrast, heard about it yesterday and already has it all figured out. I don't want to feel stupid, so I'll gloss over them."
@stefano It is interesting that he has discarded the possibility that other people might also have thought about the subject that he has spoken about, and that their comments may have brought a fresh perspective.
I have learned much from young people who have brought fresh ideas to my way of thinking.
Have I learned anything from comments people have made on Mastodon? Absolutely! A little humility, the ability to recognize overlooked errors when corrected, … There is much to be learned in conversation. And it is usually possible to block those with ill intent.
In a meeting with folks from a funding agency, planning an upcoming online seminar on a research project.
Them: "Now, are there any topics you don't want to touch? We can filter out any audience questions you're uncomfortable with."
Us: "Please please don't do that, those are the most fun questions, those are why we do this."
Applauding @admin for taking a strong, well-argued stand on this.
Can we get more admins onboard?

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, "I Remember Clifford".
I have had a really bad couple of weeks. Pain has been bad, I've had to do some hard things, my mental health has slid backwards. Just clinging to the few things that still make me happy.
@idzie
Oh no. 🥺 What things still make you happy?
GitLab's CEO writes:
> Humans still own the judgment that matters most: architecture, deep understanding of the customer problem, the tradeoffs that require taste.
I hold judgement over this decision.
I see it as a symptom of lack of understanding of how good software is actually built. And of greed, directed by the hype train and FOMO.
And I find this blogpost, and the whole idea of pushing slop generators tasteless.
@rysiek The tool vs. replacement debate depends entirely on who holds the tool and why. In some fields AI is genuinely assistive. In others it's clearly a cost-cutting excuse. The difference is intent. 🤔
🔹 Last week: 74 cases
🔹 This week: 269 cases
Not sure if this is due to a reporting issue or something else, but that’s a significant increase.
@DenisCOVIDinfoguy Website includes this lovely bit of info:
"We are also improving how we report COVID-19 hospitalisation data. Data will now be available for all districts. In the past it was only available for a limited number of districts."
I don't think many people knew we weren't getting all districts (I didn't know). 🤦♀️
My mother, the last member of my family aside from me, is in very serious condition and also in deep, practiced denial about it. She refuses any kind of medical care for religious reasons that I do not share, putting me in a very difficult spot as her medical power of attorney. Everything is extraordinarily fucked up in ways I won’t even try to explain. I may not be sharing much of anything here during this time.
@impermanen_ I’m so sorry. Many levels to this challenge. We are here if you need support! Long live donkeys! 🫏❤️
