I mean if you use an LLM from time to time, to find some typos, let it feedback about what you wrote or the terms you used or maybe even let it draft some boring boilerplate stuff, I can live with that, but probably everything else is going to drive a real human software engineer mad at some point.

Sehr hilfreich ist es, um Kommadozeilenbefehle zu formulieren und um monotone Aufgaben zu automatisieren. Es hilft mir auch, um Probleme z.B. beim Updaten eines Konfigurationsfiles zu lösen - mit dem Problem, dass ich nur zum Teil verstehe, was ich tue (das geht mir ähnlich, wenn ich Codeschnipsel ausprobiere, die ich via Suchmaschine gefunden habe). Bei wirklich haarigen Problemen (bei mir durch die Ersetzung von #liquid durch #nunjocks als Haupt-Template-Engine) ist es katastrophal schlecht - akzeptiert aber gern Lösungen, die ich woanders gefunden habe 😊 Ich finde es brauchbar als einen weiteren Schritt des Codens hin zur natürlichen Sprache. Aber es hat keinerlei kognitive Fähigkeiten, auch wenn es deren Resultate manchmal gut imitiert.

That said FreeBSD ports could reduce the friction, like allow maintainers to directly commit their ports IMHO if it passes CI.

But the technology is still built on massive theft of personal information, no matter where it's running. Arguing that running it locally makes everything okay is nothing but an admission of egocentrism.
That's why reading praises for the slop machines with the privacy hashtag makes me angry!

Perhaps this wouldn't meet your definition of "slop machine" (or as I call it 'Trained #MOLE'), but what about a generative model that's generated locally, using only data that's in the Public Domain or under Free Culture licenses (eg CC BY, CC BY-SA)?

I'm not sure about the point of the post.
1. anecdotal evidence is not a solid back up for an argument.
2. I don't think anybody is blocking young people from tinkering at home?
3. Putting hurdles in the way adds motivation to learn or find creative ways how to circumvent them.
4. Big corporations have teams of psychologists convincing people to spend time on their platforms. The assumption that young people are cleverer than them is disrespecting the psychological profession.
