Gen-AI’s biggest contribution to my life has been making it 3x harder to look up credible information.
People said I was a fool to hold on to my illustrated ’how-to’ books from the 80s, but who’s the only bitch with a reliable method of performing DIY masonry now?
I had a good run of avoiding it for the last few years, but I regret to inform that I am once again digging through boxes of microcontroller boards and looking at other microcontroller boards on the internet and holy shit a teensy 4.1 with 16MB of PSRAM and 256MB flash and well, folks, I am having Thoughts
The US has declared Autistici/Inventati, an Italian anarchist hacker (in the classic sense of the term) collective, a terrorist organization. https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/sb0616/
But what you really ought to read is this article about A/I's history, and what this means https://cavallette.noblogs.org/2026/08/10083/2
I'm concerned that the US government is starting to identify decentralized media infrastructure as a threat to its survival. Repost information about this broadly, and if you have media contacts, inform them of counter-narratives; there could come a time where the fediverse, or any decentralized network infrastructure, is a target as well if we don't sound the alarms now.
EDIT: I linked to the wrong page! The second link is now fixed :)

New Twitter launches, says Musk's X gave up the name
Judge hasn't ruled on X Corp’s preliminary injunction, but Operation Bluebird plows ahead

@arstechnica cool so now we have two Twitters, as if one wasn't enough already
The Gulf of America stuff was overwhelmingly dumb, but the Lake America stuff is somehow even dumber.
Aside from the general idiocy of unilaterally renaming places shared other nations, the name "Ontario" derives from an Iroquois word for "great lake". It's literally as generic and neutral a name for a large lake as you can get. The Canadian province is named after the lake, not the other way around. And there are also places in the US named Ontario (in California and New York, among others).
@mattblaze I wonder what he will do when he finds out America is named after an Italian Navigator via a map drawn by a German cartographer. Neither of whom were of course true Americans.
Once again, I find myself begging FOSS folks to recognize that open source is, by construction, a political movement. The onus is thus on us to make sure that our politics are in keeping with our actual values.
We cannot, especially during a global resurgence of fascism, act like it's possible to be apolitical.
Update on copy/paste being broken on GIMP/Inkscape on macOS (and as it turns out, TIFF loading is also broken on Windows): They won't fix it, because their image loader is legacy on macOS and Windows, but also there are no plans to bring the non-legacy image loader to those platforms.

I guess GTK is now deprecated and unmaintained on anything that isn't Linux, and with it every app that uses GTK.
Edit: Looks like the person who made those comments hadn't gotten the right message and that is not the plan. Still, 5+ years with broken image pasting on macOS, an untriaged issue, lack of awareness of what the plan is... I don't think non-Linux platform support is being taken very seriously here...
@lina
Ain't anything that isn't GNU/Linux already deprecated in first place?
I didn't go to school. I turned it down. Some college up in Jacksonville offered me 10, 15, 5 million USD some stuff like that. But I turned it down, just to grind for Mastodon.
Canadian governments ought to replace MS Office by #LibreOffice.
(This is one of those actions that cause pain in the US, but benefit Canadians; governments should have done it long ago.)

Folks, please remember that even if gaming doesn't matter to you, personally, many people rely on it for so many reasons. Without gaming, I wouldn't be able to go anywhere but to the doctor. I am bedbound. I'm stuck in one room all except maybe 10 days a year. I can only do small games for short periods now, but this is a mental health thing for me and for many others. Don't shit on people for defending something that's important to them. It's valid, even if you don't see that.
Am not a gamer, and I'm glad you get to visit imaginary worlds however you can. <3
@davidgerard @mawhrin @wfk At one point, ed was a significant upgrade to my computing environment (Software Tools walked through implementing it, and I stole shamelessly).

Don’t you use iCloud Photo Library @siracusa? You can’t have your photos on an external for that, right?
@richrichmond I think you can. (If not, I’m in big trouble!) https://support.apple.com/en-us/108345
