The Gulf of America stuff was overwhelmingly dumb, but the Lake America stuff is somehow even dumber.
Aside from the general idiocy of unilaterally renaming places shared other nations, the name "Ontario" derives from an Iroquois word for "great lake". It's literally as generic and neutral a name for a large lake as you can get. The Canadian province is named after the lake, not the other way around. And there are also places in the US named Ontario (in California and New York, among others).
