San Francisco, please vote no on D, E, and F. This mayor and his billionaire buddies already think they're above the law when it comes to public records requests, let's not give them even more power.

I’m across Apple passwords being a good enough replacement for a personal 1Password vault. What do y’all use for encrypted notes?
@Unixbigot self-hosted Bitwarden, i.e. VaultWarden.

#IMadeThis is a great hash tag to follow on here. You see so many amazing things and sometime you think "hey maybe I could do something like that... probably not as well... but? why not?"
That is the kind of thought that makes you slowly grow powerful and unstoppable in many many unexpected ways.
"I could do that."
Yes! You could!
@aerror Huh, I actually did for some reason, even though I was above the threshold. Though this has been going on for some days, and turning it off didn't change anything.
Breaking, exclusive and spicy, from me:
A new identity theft service launched on the dark web this week is selling digital scans of more than 153 million drivers licenses from people in the United States and Canada. Based on interviews with individuals whose licenses are available for purchase on this service, it appears to be siphoning images collected by a widely-used identity verification company based in Louisiana. KrebsOnSecurity also has learned that the New Orleans field office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) today launched an official inquiry into the source of the images.

Companies were never your allies. I hope that is clear now.
I'm looking for Linux distro recs for an old PC and Fedi feels like the absolute best place for this lol
I've come into possession of my grandmother's old laptop, which in turn is my dad's old laptop, which broke and had its insides kinda fucked up
It's a 2010 ASUS N61J, not that it really matters cause about 10 years ago my dad managed to fry it while doing BIOS upgrade and the shop he took it to couldn't find the right parts so instead of the i7 this thing now has an i3 M350
It also has an Nvidia GeForce GT 325M, 6GB of RAM, and from my messing around in Windows 7 it's actually still a fully functional PC
So naturally, I wanna put Linux on it >:3
I want something that can, like, run on this thing, which shouldn't be That hard, but the main thing is the GPU stuff, I really want something that can support the dGPU and be able to switch to the Intel one if needed too. But it's really old and I know Linux has Issues with old Nvidia cards, and the older it is the worse it gets 💀
Dear Mastodonians
I am very pleased to announce the release of my latest film "Final countdown".
Over the past months I have been thoroughly researching the Ukraine war, to bring you a well founded analysis and answer the key question: Is Putin losing the war?
I have good news… so watch it for free on YouTube:

@randahl Dammit, Randahl, I followed you ages ago because you're clever and funny and have a funky hairstyle--and only now do I discover that you are also smart and insightful and I'm going to have to read your posts more closely.
In German, they don't say "thank you very much," they say "a villion dank's"
And that's beautiful

This is fascinating, useful, and – within the limited ambit of my knowledge – accurate. I’d love to know more about who’s responsible, though.
@adamgreenfield @blogdiva Not to be too much of a downer, but it looks like this site might currently be too new to be too useful. The idea seems to be that people submit and vote on the "standard" tools, and once a particular tool gets 10 net upvotes in a category, it gets recognized as "standard".
Zero tools are recognized.
Each category does seem to have a number of tools that are proposed, and the ones I've seen certainly aren't the worst choices, but bear this site with a grain of salt: these aren't the "industry standards", but they're "what a couple people think the industry standards are".
Hopefully, this site will take off and become a real repository of broad expertise.
