@gsuberland i saw a video a few minutes ago of a 70s product from the USA. It was a hot dog cooker, you stick the sausages between two metal spikes, then close the flimsy plastic lid to activate the machine and make a direct electrical connection between the wall socket and the hot dogs. Anyways,

@halcy oh yeah I've seen those things. I guess at least in the USA you're doing it with half the voltage.

I am suuuuuperpissed-off that the flu jabs *that we had to pay for* have done nothing, and that I’m down with the flu anyway, alongside upwards of three-quarters of everyone else I know. I guess they misjudged which strain was going to dominate this year? Argh.

@adamgreenfield yeah, the vax this year is only 40% effective against this year's strain. Hope you feel better soon

Upon submitting my rating for Bugonia on letterboxd it presented me with this captcha, which amused me :)

(The movie is great, imo)

A spoof captcha asking the user to select any squares that contains aliens. The photo presented is that of the CEO in the film (played by Emma Stone) that is kidnapped by conspiracy theorists for being, in their view, an alien.

NZers, you're probably seeing the campaign to look at a minimum age for kids to be on social media. I think the real questions go like this:

Do you trust social media companies like Meta and X to hold, manage and protect personally-identifying information about our young people?

or...

Do you trust (and want) the government to put tax spend into creating and running a mechanism to hold, manage and protect personally-identifying information about our young people?

Because if you're a no on both of those, we don't need to talk about whether a minimum age is a good idea.

The thing about “Somali Fraud” is that Donald Trump raped and sexually abused girls within Jeffrey Epstein’s child sex trafficking ring.

@sidereal it's 2026 and I still only buy phones that still have them. Currently Moto G Stylus 2025.

That said, people also said I'd like having a big phone once I got one. Nope, gimme back my tiny phones.

The moment GMV is labeled ARR, the business is built on sand

https://oswarld.com/eng/insight/250816_ai-arr-illusion-gmv-vs-arr

#HackerNews #GMV #ARR #businessmodel #sandillusion #finance

The ARR Illusion in the Age of AI

This article examines why the practice of AI startups disguising GMV as ARR distorts business sustainability. It redefines the true meaning of ARR and analyzes how the revenue structure of many AI companies resembles a brokerage or reseller model rather than SaaS. Using the analogy of investors who only inflate transaction volume, it presents—from a consulting perspective—why repeatability, margins, and control are far more critical than the magnitude of the numbers.

Today I learnt that French novelist and journalist Émile Zola spent his exile in London taking voyeuristic photos of Victorian women on bicycles. Who knew?

While I often use #openstreetmap and especially the excellent @organicmaps app, I wonder if there is an alternative to reviews on #googlemaps?

Is there any #opensource solution - ideally even #federated?

Having a solution based on #activitypub that allows reviews for POIs on @openstreetmap might be very interesting and open a lot of opportunities.
