While I don't have a bucket list there's a bunch of stuff that comes to mind when asked about it.

Until 10 to 15yrs ago a solid item was "drive a train, do a powerslide".

Then one day I got the chance to do the first part of that item. Today I was reminded of it as someone shared the resulting incident report (created due to me also ticking off the second part..).

Little thread as I enjoy the recollection. It was no "duck in a datacenter" day of good, but surely one I remember fondly.

Curious, it’s much more likely that children get hurt, abused or indoctrinated at home or commuting to school or in school than on the Internet, yet no one is banning homes, commutes or schools.

But everyone is eager to cut off children’s access to the Internet.

I need to call this one out, sorry.

More and more, people joining this space are entirely unaware that this is a technical foundation of the space, and more and more people come to me as a service provider asking me why their content is on Web sites they did not sign up for.

I understand why.

You understand why.

Thousands of people do not, and tens and hundreds of thousands being invited in will also not understand this.

We need to do better than "public is public".

Re: Jack Dorsey skipped ActivityPub, built AtProto, lost Twitter, funded Bluesky, watched it become a company with VCs and a board, said it was "repeating all the mistakes," left, and now funds Nostr.

@dansup@mastodon.social there are walls.. perhaps you don't see them because Pixelfed is large enough that it gets benefit of the doubt.

I got called a VC funded tech bro once, simply because that person found their public posts and profile on NodeBB (because, you know, federation), and absolutely did not back down until their instance's mod told them to quit it.

The smaller devs doing interesting things with fedi get absolutely fucked over for simply exposing the fact that... public stuff is public. 🤯

That's not even getting into any of the tech arguments that make AP federation harder than it should be.

PSA: If you block the `claude` user on GitHub, you'll get a warning every time you view a repo with that user in its commit history.

Now, the moment you look at a repo, you can immediately adjust your expectations.

You may do so here: https://github.com/settings/blocked_users

@ink You are right of course that algorithms are not *inherently* bad. It's just that 99% of the existing ones are. And that's why there's such enormous rhetorical power in being able to say of Mastodon "There is no algorithm".

@mike rhetorical power or marketing 😄 either way it operates to prevent people from understanding that there are other useful ways of ordering their online lives than by a chronological algorithm. the important question that remains is how much transparency and agency do they have...

@liaizon@social.wake.st

I've been saying this

the SWF is just kinda there but to my knowledge doesn't really do much outside of like wordpress and mastodon. and working with meta i guess.

I for one have never heard of anyone from the SWF or Mastodon reaching out to other implementations to coordinate on, say, quotes with authorization.

meanwhile on the ATProto end, there is groups like https://standard.site just to standardize long-form content.

Trying to take a holiday from #linguistics by attending an intensive music course and then find it’s all about phonetics, semantics, and historical sociolinguistics!

#EarlyMusic

Slide displayed on wall behind a grand piano: What is "playing vocally"? "We should strive to imitate the human voice and lear from it. You may say but how is it possible, since the voice can produce all the sounds of speech? [...], to which I would reply that just as the worthy and perfect painter imitates everything created by nature with the variation of colours, so can wind instruments imitate the sound of the human voice [...] through variations of the breath and of the movements of the tongue [...] I have heard players who can make even the words understood through their playing. It could well be said that the instrument lacks nothing but the form of the human body, just as they say a good painting lacks only the wind." Silvestro Ganassi, La Fontegara, 1535

@alexchapman @fireborn @munchkinbear @ky0les Snikket is the benchmark I would recommend going for due to its well-implemented chat circles/channels capability, that and their mobile app being *extremely* accessible. So Thrive Messenger could chat with folks on the server utilizing the Snikket mobile app. The accessibility of their web portal is also superb.

Just looking at how "AI" is going. My server's `dmesg` is just that. Just the firewall blocking "AI" scrapers

Screenshot of an output of the linux dmesg command showing just the server blocking IPs (all IPs that server blocks are AI scraper)

@tante all those added processes just to clean out the mess! Who will pay for it? Don't we have the right to bill it to those who run the scrapers?

it's very easy to succeed as an indie gamedev all you gotta do is get tens of thousands of followers, significant numbers of true fans, and then ship at least one game a year (preferably more)

@eniko I followed a lot of indiedevs via streaming that kinda gave up and just kept creating gamedev content, mostly hustle/inspirational stuff, that really demotivates me even more.
