I think there are some pieces missing here. Hosting does scale down poorly, but it only scales poorly because of how we host. There *is* an increased cost and complexity to shutting down small sites. If we can change the way we host, make it easier to replicate, then there *is* an asymmetry. It was technically as simple as pushing buttons to shut down A/I, but it was not politically as simple. Forcing them to build a case to shut down every little site *is* a different order of complexity. It's easy to confuse the technical and the political. We should not be so naive.
We need to focus on making hosting easier, on simplifying the complexities, on building open federations (like Co-op Cloud) focused on sharing resources to make distributed systems more viable.
More importantly, self-hosting vs collective hosting doesn't change the impact equation. If repression can cleanly target it's victims, then repression wins. Resistence that works is resistence that forces the oppressor to attack people who aren't otherwise aligned. This radicalizes unaligned people into the resistence. Every victory by the agressor must be made pyrrhic.
This is done by mixing hosting. Stop hosting anarchist only sites. That makes an easy target. Host sites that help people. Provide free hosting for liberal orgs, for churches and temples, make the headline say, "church websites shut down in counterterrorism campaign." Start from the assumption that there will be a crackdown, write headline that would be the most damaging to the enemy, and work backwards.
It's time to learn some insurgency theory for fuck sake.
And about that cybernetic legibility thing. It's definitely one element to consider, but I don't think the zine really dug in as much as I'd like. Reducing legibility may mean dropping offline. The state has been tooling itself around controlling the Internet. Moving radical activity offline forces state forces to retool. That increases complexity.
But there are other methods of decreasing legibility. There are a lot of radical things that the system struggles to or cannot intepret as radical. This is why I advocate for centering disaster anarchism, community building (setting up tool libraries and community pantries). A small group of people can increase the complexity such that they absorb much of the capacity of the repressieve apparatus. But that doesn't really matter unless society is organized, invisibly, to leverage that opportunity.
Anarchism is not blowing up police stations. It is building systems of mutual coordination. That can be invisible, or illegible, to the system.
Cybernetics is all about control. The adversary of control is complexity. If you are resisting control, your goal is to make it as complex as possible to stop you. That doesn't mean "we should all take this new strategy" but, as hinted at but not made explicit in the zine, that we should *all agree on objectives but all apply multiple different strategies*.

I think it's time to spend some of those investor-subsidised AI tokens on reverse-engineering the F-35 software!
I'm more upset than I've been in a while.
Windows 11 sets the default documents folder to onedrive\documents. Anything that gets saved there gets backed up to one drive. This includes various save games, all my Reaper stuff, and various other odds and ends that I like to, you know, save.
To save disc space, OneDrive also defaults to files being online-only. They're not stored on your device, they're just listed there. So despite what they call it, this is in fact not a backup at all, because it doesn't create an extra copy. It is actually just transferring your most precious, irreplacible, personal files to Microsoft in the background, and trusting that nothing will happen. You can see where this is going, but just to underline the point with a bleeding fucking dagger, I did not ask for any of this, I just clicked save like I have done for the last twenty or so years of my life using Windows.
Since I don't care about and have never intentionally used onedrive, I signed out of it. Flash forward six months, the files that I thought were on my computer (because I can go see them there in the folder) are in fact gone from my hard drive, and also Onedrive nuked them from orbit.
Years of my life, gone without a trace. Thanks so much, Microsoft. Whoever came up with all those ideas probably got massive performance bonuses, because we're in the worst timeline.
Goodnight.
@dsalo yes, that struck me, too.
@MarkRDavid I dunno how they collect it now. Presumably some fascistic method.
@lauren @MarkRDavid Apparently 96% of uk households pay the TV license fee already. It is a worry that the 4% who don’t is likely to include people who can least afford the change. I pay mine by monthly direct debit. Someone cleverer than me will have to tell if that’s more or less fascistic than the free prescriptions I get.
The SFC is not our ally, and has not been for quite a while.
One of the biggest disappointments in recent years for me.
@burgervege oui, ca sera bien.
Ne pas oublier que le déploiement d'unité qui ne sont pas de la région est VOLONTAIRE pour justement qu'ils ne soient pas limité par le faite de connaître la population.
We can’t educate our way out of a culture of rape because the problem isn’t one of *ignorance*.
The problem is that some people—mostly cis- and heteronormative men and boys—have been recruited to accept their own subordination in a hierarchical system by rewarding them with power over even-more subordinate people—mostly women and children.
I've been struggling with finding new clients for a while now. I'm not very good at selling myself and my services, nor am I good at overcharging people for basic work like I've seen from a lot of companies that I've worked with.
Most of my clients are small businesses, where a few hundred dollars a month matters a ton. Between the pandemic and AI tools, a lot of my clients have themselves been feeling the hurt too. Which has translated into fewer projects coming in.
For all of the tech folks who celebrated the pandemic as a way to make more money online, yall are ghoulish.
Vibe coded software is the digital equivalent of forever chemicals. Hard to get rid of and its long term effects are still unknown. But they look like a miraculously simple and fast solution to a multitude of problems.
The longer I live on this Earth, the more I understand why geese just attack people randomly.
Identifying sandpipers is hard. Are those legs black or are they covered in mud? Would you say this bill is more refined than that bill? Would you call this feather pattern scaly? These are the questions those of us born to love shorebirds are constantly asking - except for those people who get it instantly, but let's not talk about them. In this case I had to study this Baird's Sandpiper's hind quarters to determine if his wing feathers were longer than his tail feathers.

The bug is fixed, but privacy concerns remain.
Abolishing rape culture entails abolishing those systems of hierarchy and subordination that render women, children, trans people, imprisoned people, and any non-conforming men into the subordinate subjects of cishetero men, who are in turn the subordinate subjects of the state and capital.
