hellman wasn't fully sure on this point but what he did say was that primes of the form q = 2^m - 1 for some m if you can find them are even fucking better because you can losslessly transfer them to any m bit message
i don't know why number theorists and computer scientists aren't jumping out of their fucking seat at something that works in a machine numeral type because it's a prime number and just off of a power of two what else do you want
i'm asking because i haven't seen any cryptanalysis of this or other elliptic curve crypto and the arguments of security that go by key size alone are incredibly weak. this was something diffie called out in the 1976 paper as some bullshit that historians had found cardano (math fuckboy) would claim, incorrectly

@meadow I wonder if he was appointed by the current US administration
But
Before I get too deeply embedded in my own Computer Bullshit, I'd really love to hear from you.
What are interesting hardware and software projects happening right now?
Who's doing weird stuff with computers?
What are projects that haven't gotten enough attention.
I was, when I was paying attention, really into LoRa mesh stuff, project gemini/smallweb stuff, retrocomputing, and anything that positioned a microcontroller as a PC replacement or companion.
I was carrying a palm, or a HP200LX, and I was doing a bulk of my daily work on an HP Omnibook 430 (or 425?) running MS-DOS and Win31 from ROM on AA batteries (It's the best computer that ever existed.)

Treasury Takes Action Against Violent Far-Left Terrorist Networks
Today, 26 August 2026, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) took action to counter the growing threat posed by violent far-left terrorist groups. OFAC sanctioned Autistici Inventati, an Italy-based entity that supplies specialized digital architecture, tools, and services* for Antifa cells and other violent far-left extremists, including a foreign terrorist organization; Palestine Action, a United Kingdom (UK)-based organization proscribed as a terrorist group by the UK government in July 2025; and the transnational group Masar Badil, which operates as a front for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization.
“Far-left extremists, their fronts, and their enablers should be on notice: We will bring the full weight of our economic tools to bear,” said Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent. “Political terrorism has no place in our society, and we will continue to cut the financial lifelines of these groups until they are eliminated.”

I'm looking for someone with high attention to detail to collaborate with on Obsidian, but it's so hard to find good Android developers 😢
@kepano there’s a good reason designers / developers with attention to detail tend to stick to Apple‘s platforms.
Just using Android simulator compared to iOS simulator is so much more of a pain in the ass: copy / paste doesn’t work with keyboard shortcuts, it’s incredibly slow, it uses its own routing and can therefore often not interact with local APIs, graphics rendering is different than on a real device and much more. I‘m only doing the absolute minimum for Andoid and target iOS first.
@travisfw I'm fortunate enough to be in a wealthy country so the first couple of layers of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is covered, but the rest (incl sleep & health) is a lifetime of fail. After 30+ years of it you start to get the hint.
@notzed ouch I am sorry 😢
No, #ArchLinux is not associating with DHH or any of his projects. I'd sooner resign.
@nblr @davidgerard @henryk Yep, I see no substitute for medical isotopes on the horizon, which means reactors producing neutrons to activate the sources. Eg. Tc99m generators: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technetium-99m_generator
@cstross @nblr @davidgerard @henryk But those need only be in the tens of MWs, such as OPAL, Australia’s only nuclear reactor in Sydney.

"earn" is such a peculiar word to use here, given what the article is actually saying.
CEOs _receive_ 614 times more pay than their workers.
@jenniferplusplus agreed.
The flip side of this is that students earn grades, they do not "receive" them: the grade they receive is the instructor' best assessment of the quality of the work submitted. (This is handy wording to dissuade students from complaining about their grades.)
starting to seriously consider a 15 minute video call consultation as a prerequisite to opening a PR on any of my projects
@glyph I don't like the forcing function, but it might not be the worst thing for projects to remember that community—real community—precedes code generation.
I actually think the fork->PR from anyone workflow broke our brains a bit.

REMINDER: Mitch McConnell hasn’t been seen or heard from in now 73 days. Yet he still:
•Has his job
•Gets paid, and
•Gets free world-class healthcare
The man who voted against a living wage, against universal healthcare, & against guaranteed paid leave, is getting all three when he needs it most. Every person deserves the human dignity McConnell is getting on the taxpayer dime. Anything less is shameless cruel hypocrisy.
@justine it could be implemented (we already have a test implementation from akkoma, that I used to migrate my old broken instance). But we won’t implement it because snac is great, and I could never do anything to harm that project, because I love it and the dev is a very nice person.
I totally agree that snac and it's dev are amazing but wouldn't giving folk a choice be good too?
After a little practice, using masks to print a grey background to an otherwise black print is proving to be an easier than expected way to increase the sense of depth (aerial perspective) to engravings.
