The flip side of this is that students earn grades, they do not "receive" them: the grade they receive is the instructor' best assessment of the quality of the work submitted. (This is handy wording to dissuade students from complaining about their grades.)
@jenniferplusplus I wish the word "renumeration" were more widely used to describe work-related payments over here. Even "compensation" has a moral tinge to it.
