This year geraniums & tropical vinca failed on the deck. I didn't think it could get that hot for long, but it did. Shade & water were not enough.
Perennials that did well: eucalyptus, rosemary, succulents, verbena, sedum, ajuga, bay, guava, fig, pomegranate, sages, conifers. Osteospermum survived to bloom again. Annuals: dipladenia, cleome, sun coleus, mini-petunias. Non-hardies: euphorbia, gardenia, setcreaseas, lantana, plumbago.

If I was to cobble together a computer that met what I'm after, I think what I'd end up with is a 60% mechanical keyboard (I use a shitty Durgod keyboard at home and it'd be fine), a reTerminal E1001 display with the ESP32-S3 running SolarOS, a bank of 18650s and a little clamshell case to stick it all in.
I think that'd hit most of my goals. I could probably even add edge lighting or a front light to it, for those rare cases when I need to use a computer in the dark.
So I should probably poke around and see if anyone has gotten SolarOS (or anything other than the included firmware) running on the E1001.
@ajroach42 I occasionally get struck with a desire to build something like that, but get discouraged when I add up costs and it's always about the same as buying a 5 year old midrange thinkpad, which I know is fundamentally a different device, but they're much more versatile I think. The problem is of course the software.
Which is to say, the way I normally daydream about solving this problem is an OS/environment built from first principles to meet the needs of such a task. Of course, I am a terrible developer so it will never happen!
