I have been involved in subcontracted hardware projects for multiple fortune 500 companies with >$250k project budgets that relied on open source hw with fewer than 20 stars on github, just because it’s not in-house doesn’t mean they don’t do it.

A thing I feel a pending societal need for: standard, safely-used physical interfaces for home-scale battery storage.

If I have power but my neighbor doesn't, I should be able to unplug my own battery and wheel it across the street.

The narwhal's tusk was so extraordinary that medieval merchants sold it as a unicorn horn. It can grow more than six feet long, spiraling in a way that has puzzled scientists for centuries. It is, technically, a tooth — the left canine — and it has no enamel.

Researchers at Aarhus University used three of the world's most powerful synchrotrons, across Sweden, Switzerland, and France, to map the tusk's interior in three dimensions. What they found is that the outer layer spirals left and the inner layer spirals right, creating a "biological counterbalance" where the two structures meet. This double-spiral architecture allows the tusk to withstand enormous mechanical force without breaking.

The growth pattern is genetically programmed and stays constant across the narwhal's entire 80-year lifespan, preserved layer by layer like tree rings. The team is now investigating whether those rings can be used to read North Atlantic climate history. "The discovery not only solves a centuries-old natural science mystery," said lead author Dr. Adrian Rodriguez-Palomo, "it also provides new insight into how nature constructs advanced materials."

As for what the narwhal actually uses the tusk for, that part remains a mystery.

Other than spreadsheets, I've always found word niggly to use. But then I used to use WordPerfect.

For the majority of my stuff now I use markdown.

Although most folks are used to OFFICE. I kinda wish we could move off that stack. I'm hopeful for @CryptPad in that regard. Although getting folks used to alternatives takes empathy and training materials. Not just documentation.

Onboarding for businesses needs more than RTFM.

@afewbugs If it's so safe, feed it to Drumph. If it's safe only in the lab, it'll never handle the millions of tons of plastic waste poisoning the land, sea and air. If it isn't economically scalable, i.e. cheaper than cheap, it'll remain a headline.

We need to ban all single use plastic production and make companies liable for current waste streams.
