There is a proposal for F-Droid to adopt an interim AI policy, along the lines of Debian's pro-AI policy.
I am not in favour of this.
In particular, I don't want to see genAI code in either F-Droid's own software, or in apps in F-Droid's repository:

Mine is, of course, just one voice. But I will continue to push for human-written FOSS apps, for human users.

@neil literally "no AI-code" in code is fiction I am afraid, also how can you check that and what is the difference from the old days when people copied parts of code from elsewhere without checking. The importance thing is quality (in various aspects) and being responsible for what you make, what tools you use (AI or others), is secondary?

A few weeks ago, I went into a design furniture store in Denmark to buy a garden furniture set. We had a great conversation about their beautiful products right until the point where I realized they conditioned their price on the registration of my data, or I would have to pay 40 percent more.

@hweimer in this allegory, I rather imagine a pyramid of knowledge (and people) to build on - and others doing maintenance and footwork, such as providing tools. Occasionally I do genuine research. As a support scientist not as often as you and other PIs - even PIs are more focussed to keep their engine well running then spending time in the lab themselves (e.g. getting grants for their working group). (You being a theoretical physicist are used to exchanging part of that equation to match your case, I suppose 😉 .)
The issue I have with the pyramid of knowledge is how we value it. Currently, we are valuing the stones at the top although they are the least durable ones. They might just be fraud or AI (who can tell the difference?), the latter type of mathematical proofs being essentially useless beyond the one bit of information about the proven statement.
If we stopped being evaluated for the results we have generated and instead were asked which other science have we made possible, we would make a step in the right direction in my opinion.
This would immediately kill incentives both for research fraud and useless AI results at the same time.
Context switching between Loops and Pixelfed is getting easier, and I'm much more familiar with Pixelfed than I was a month ago, having worked on it recently.
I like being able to jump over to Loops and finish/polish off the last parts of a major feature, and namesake of the grant, Loops Live.

Ja, dat leer ik mijn klanten ook. ISP is heel iets anders dan een host. Ze denken in het begin vaak nog dat als je een domein hebt, dat je dan automatisch ook internet hebt. Nee, internet is de mogelijkheid om online diensten te gebruiken zoals email, browsen, streaming, et cetera. Een host geeft je een plekje op een 'server' (een computer die open staat voor extern contact via specifieke poorten), en die jouw website dus 'serveert'.

@joyce honestly in my experience, other fediverse models like Misskey are much better introductions for non-fedi people because they behave a bit like a private clubhouse first and allow people to expand their accounts further into the fediverse at their pace.
on that format, your local feed is pretty much the most important one, and everything else is ancillary to your own account & experience.

I would love to see more of my friends start using Mastodon. A number have gotten accounts, but they don't stay. They say there are two reasons:
1. It's a steep learning curve.
2. They feel they must pass multiple purity tests to be accepted.
Not much can be done for those upset by the first one. But the second one, yeah, I see their point.

Every once in awhile, in the midst of my nights, I’m struck dumb with awe and a strange, refracted grief:
It’s legitimately fucking *crazy* how good the internet used to be
It's striking to me the differences. Our networks were more diverse and more open. The special edition of this year's GIS watch is interesting as it covers things like FIDOnet and how our current networks are not fit for purpose for communities around the world.
I miss the early internet so much. I wonder how different it could have been.
