That we allow companies to display ads *no human has reviewed* to millions of people is beyond absurd. Google doesn't have a business model without being allowed to do it, but there is no right to any given business model. It's parasitism, because we all pay the cost of Google's refusal to properly vet ads.

I’m also a control freak. I *have* to know how things work, so if they go wrong I know I can fix them. My worst nightmare is having to support a system in production that I don’t (and maybe can’t) *truly* understand. That there’s a point beyond which I’m out of options

The way that you know there's no such thing as a progressive rich person is that all the rich people who claim to be progressive spend approximately no money whatsoever on forwarding progressive ideas and goals in the public consciousness. As opposed to fascist rich people, who literally spend many tens of billions of dollars over the last two decades to get their policies enacted.
The only solution is to abolish wealth, something that gives USians the psychological clap.

I have spent the last twenty years hacking my nonexistent socks off to build the technology with which I accompany my teaching. Some observations
- Students see that I write programs, unlike the people who officially teach them programming.
- We get to talk about how they feel, as users, about a technology that could get better if we figured out how.
- I am never busier programming than when I am teaching, and the irony kills me.
