@ianbetteridge do east and west or nations really matter any more? It feels pretty openly "oligarchs versus the rest of us". Nations only matter when they are controlled by an oligarch (Gulf states, Russia, China, USA) but they only reflect the whim of the man at the top, not any national interest

(Thx to @juandesant for catching the autocarrot)
I'm not sure that nations only matter when they are controlled by an oligarch. There's something in my head about nations being controlled by rich people. Rather than just an oligarch in the political sense. I don't know. I need to think about that a little more.
There are a lot of smart people on Mastodon, so I’m looking for someone with the knowledge to help me build a death pod but it's more like a badass bobsled that rides a water slide into a volcano but it can't be plastic because it would melt and it probably shouldn't be metal because it would likely get too hot before you were launched into the lava so please let me know what materials would work best because this is not something I want to mess up.
Please boost for visibility.
@Alice i use oven bags for my digi volcano experience as the temp that releases most of the beneficial terpenes is a low 380f
Infos und Anmeldung: https://www.lugbz.org/linux-day-2026/
@adrian Digital sovereignty and the role of LUGs is such an important topic. Wishing LUGBZ a great Linux Day! Greetings from ShirazLinux, Iran 🐧
I’m serious about this too, by the way
Linux as a project and as an ecosystem asked for our labor under false pretenses
why hasn’t its organizing foundation been flooded with itemized invoices for that labor?
and if you do this, include the hours you burned doing advocacy, too. that shit ain’t free.
“huh huh huh if you’re so unhappy with how linus is leading the kernel, you can always ask for a refund”
bet. where do we send the invoices for all the labor we donated to the Linux ecosystem under a promise that’s now repeatedly been broken? the Foundation can cover it at standard consultants’ rates for commercial work. I haven’t done the accounting, but I imagine they should be able to cover at least a few million dollars worth before they have to start dipping into torvalds’ paycheck
Confused? Yes me too. Still standing on the Northbound track, watching the Nothbound train going North on the SOUTHBound track, I notice the 301R rolling up on the parallel street in the Northbound direction, so I ran for it.
Driver refused my fare and said she was turning around to … south. But by this point there were about 10 confused passengers all trying to get 2 or 3 stations NORTH of here. Driver was on the comms though, trying to figure it out.
Eventually, she waved all of us to seats, refused the fares, and headed North on King - but then looped around on Bridgeport and dropped us of … at the Southbound ION station that was “out of service”. Where I had started from 20 minutes before.
Drivers understanding was the diversion was going to be trains running North on the Southbound rail - then her bus was replacing the Southbound train.
Except the next train showed up … from the North, heading Southbound.
I hope UK bookshops carry on selling the Sally Rooney novels the UK government has tried to ban.
When I was in the book trade we carried on selling imported copies of Spycatcher - the exposé of nefarious political interventions by MI5 and the CIA that Thatcher tried to ban.
As a bonus, our book co-op made a fortune, as the big chains (now Amazon, etc) bowed to the book banning.
It would be nice to see prominent Sally Rooney displays in every independent bookshop in the UK...
Women shouldn't have to anticipate violence.
This month marks three years since the EU joined the Istanbul Convention, a landmark treaty recognising gender-based violence against women as a violation of human rights.
It sets out concrete measures to prevent it, to protect victims, and hold perpetrators accountable.
Our goal is clear: a world where women can live free from fear. 🧡

@EUCommission Women must live free from fear, but we must also ask: Is violence against women actually increasing, or is greater awareness leading to more reporting? What are the root causes, poor upbringing, social attitudes, lack of respect for consent, or weak law enforcement? Sexual attraction is natural, but controlling one's behaviour is a personal responsibility. No clothing, conduct or provocation can justify violence. We need honest analysis, not just slogans.
Questo video ha un'unica perla: i sottotitoli: «Ammazza, non avevo proprio capito.»
Dopodiché, mi ricorda un cartone animato, dove un pupazzo grida: «Premi il pulsante rosso! È sempre il pulsante rosso!»
Infine: «Il mondo sta' crollando, ma fermiamoci a guardare.
@Galessandroni “Ok!” 😅
Happy Sunday! Here's a site I've built because I've been thinking about this and want to see more of it in the world: a space for describing and sharing scholarly skills that I've picked up and nurtured over the years.
Also this is a no AI zone in at least two ways: no talking about it and no using it.
"This is therefore a no AI zone in at least two ways: no talking about it (as much as possible) as a central topic — and absolutely no using it."
We need more of this! I was just at 4s and AI hype has consumed STS. Most people talking about it have nothing of value to say, so the aggregate result is just hype packaged as critique.
This is a cool site. I love reading people's theories of reading. Looking forward to more.
Also I can't believe you snatched that domain. I'm jealous!
Citing concerns about misinformation and hate, @ScottishGreens have (Finally!) made the decision to leave X for good.
They cited Mastodon as one of the 8 platforms they can still be found on but I hope this can result in more engagement on the fediverse. https://uk.news.yahoo.com/scottish-greens-quit-x-over-125527731.html #scotpol #scotland #uk #ukpol #politics #greens
I grew up during the cold war, expecting that one day we might be at war with Russia.
I just never expected we would be at war with Russia backed by the president of the USA.
@randahl don't wish to be rude but they are both fuckwits

Well, today is start by off special. Headed for the northbound train platform (I walk right past the Southbound to get there) and could see the south end of the ION 301 just as it was leaving. Got to northbound platform to find the info boards not working, then spotted the next train heading North … from the southbound platform I’d passed 15 minutes ago.
THEN they announced the service disruption. On the SOUTHbound track, south of where I was trying to go north.
